Wildcats third in Alisal Volleyball Tournament

    By Dick Sparrer

There were 22 teams that opened play in the Alisal Volleyball Tournament on April 7.

But when it came time for the championship round, only a few teams remained. And Los Gatos was one of the few.

The Wildcats posted a 6-0 record in pool play against Seaside and Hollister to advance to the tournament playoffs, then won two of three matches to clinch third place overall.

Gatos opened the playoffs with a 4-15, 15-10, 15-4 win over Mitty, but lost 15-4, 15-11 to Bellarmine a match later. The Wildcats clinched third in the tournament with a tight 16-14, 15-10 win over Homestead.

Bellaremine went on to defeat San Lorenzo Valley to claim the tournament championship.

Junior setter Michael Conry earned a place on the all-tournament team.

"We're a very young team with only two seniors," said Gatos coach Tom Jack. David Conkle and Brian Starr are the only seniors on the Los Gatos squad.

The same day the varsity team was nailing a third-place finish at Alisal, the Los Gatos junior varsity squad was claiming third in the 12-team Gilroy Volleyball Tournament.

The Wildcats lost by two points in a tough match against Mount Madonna High School to settle for third place. Bellarmine beat Mount Madonna in the championship match.

The Cats will be back in action this week when they host Saratoga on April 19. The junior varsity match begins at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity squads squaring off at 7 p.m.

    Marquardt leads Leigh

Over at Leigh, Derek Marquardt of Los Gatos hammered eight kills, but the Longhorns lost 16-14, 6-15, 15-1, 15-10 to Willow Glen in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Leigh dropped to 9-6 for the year and to 0-2 in the division with the loss.
