    Library Friends welcome board members

    By Mary Ann Cook

NEW BOARD MEMBERS: Friends of the Los Gatos Library welcomed two newcomers to its board recently--Carol Martin and Cynthia Bailey.

Martin is a member of the Los Gatos Art Docents and says, "I remember with great fondness my visits to the bookmobile as a child in Iowa. Now I take my kids to the Los Gatos Library any chance we get."

Son Cyrus, an 8th grader at Fisher, uses the library Internet for research projects. Daughter Sarah, a 5th grader at Van Meter, addressed the Town Council recently about her support for a new, larger facility. Martin runs a software training company, POWER-UP Training & Consulting.

Bailey and her husband, Ron Cataldo, sailed the East Coast and the Bahamas for the past three years, but are now back on land, for awhile. "At every port we were in, my first stop was to check out the library," Bailey says. The two retired real estate agents started their dream trip in 1996 when they bought a 70-foot ketch in Ft. Lauderdale.

Both were experienced sailors, and the idea was open-ended, to keep sailing as long as it was fun. Two glorious months sailing the Chesapeake was one of the highlights. Theirs was the biggest boat around and the object of curiosity. Thus, they fell into the role of hosts for many gatherings--Halloween parties, etc.

In Georgetown, S.C., they ran smack dab into a Civil War re-enactment. Quite a treat for Californians to get acquainted with the East Coast.

On the down side: weathering four terrifying hurricanes, including one where they had a 360-degree vantage point of nature's fury in the Bahamas. Plus, suffering several unexpected boat repairs, limping back to Ft. Lauderdale to be put shipshape again.

Their two grown children are Stuart, Los Gatos High School '84 grad; and Suzanne, '85.

FACULTY TALENT: Los Gatos High School English teacher Paris De Soto is directing "Fractured Follies," the faculty talent show to be held on April 27, at 7 p.m. The show is a fundraiser for the Leukemia Society. Tickets are $5 for seniors and students, and $10 for adults.

Bruce Crawford, history teacher, will sing a duet with Anne Martyn, (daughter of Ed and Shirley Burke) English teacher. Russ Leal, resource specialist, and his band ExtraLarge, will perform; and Kurt Krosche and Tonya Lynch, English teachers, will perform a parody.

De Soto also will raise money for leukemia by participating in the Wildflower, a half-Iron Man triathlon on May 6, at Lake San Antonio near Paso Robles. She'll bike 60 miles, swim a mile and run 13 miles.

KIDLIT: Aspiring children's writers and illustrators can meet reps in that field on April 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Daves Avenue School Library. Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) will sponsor the conference.

On hand will be Rosalie Heacock, agent; Eden Edwards, editor and marketing manager from Houghton Mifflin; Walter Mayes, publisher's book representative; and Valerie Lewis of Hicklebee's, children's book store in San Jose. To register call Joy Hulme at 408.354.3637. Cost is $60, or $50 for SCBWI members. Box lunch will be catered by Sweet Pea's. Art portfolios will be perused, but not critiqued.

SILENT AUCTION: A silent auction to benefit Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence will be held on April 28 and 29. The auction is sponsored by the Los Gatos History Club. Theme baskets with goods from local merchants will be on display before the auction at the clubhouse from noon to 7 p.m. on April 28, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 29.

Entrance fee is $5 and includes refreshments. Diana Crawford and Jeanne Rajabzadeh are co-chairwomen. Call 408.395.6431 for more information.

SPEECH COMPETITION: Andrew Ow of Los Gatos High School received a $100 check for his winning speech in the annual Rotary Youth Speech Contest. Second place was won by Taylor Winkleman. The two other Los Gatos contestants were Sean Catanese and Remy Goldberg.

Chatham Forbes was chairman of the districtwide event, and Sharon Smith is the high school speech instructor.

TOP SKIPPER: Dawn Riley, who may be the world's foremost woman skipper, will speak at the Los Gatos Yacht Club meeting on May 9. Reservations are required, and the people to call are Commodore Ted Miller at 408.353.8602, or Leo Feltz at 408.356.0541.

Riley participated in the recent America's Cup in New Zealand. Official photographer for the race team is Tom Zinn, a Saratoga High School grad and Riley's significant other.

ANNIVERSARY: A Place for Teens will receive 10 percent of the sales at the French Cellar on April 21. Owners Sallie Robbins-Druian and Jay Druian celebrate their wine shop's second anniversary at 32 E. Main Street.

BOOK SIGNING: Ric Giardina will read from and sign copies of his poetry collection, Threads of Gold at the Los Gatos Company on April 25, at 7 p.m.
