Los Gatan receives award for community service
Kirsten Walter of Los Gatos is one of five U.S. college students to receive the Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award March 16 in Providence, Rhode Island. The award recognizes college students with an outstanding commitment to community service and includes a $1,500 contribution to a community service project of the recipient's choice.
Walter graduated from Bates College in 1999. While a student there, Walter designed, coordinated, planned and tended to a community garden at a nearby public housing project. The harvest from the garden is enjoyed by local families, sold at a local vegetable stand and serves as a focal point for an educational curriculum on children's self-esteem and individual expression. The garden has also been recognized as a source of beauty in the local community.
