LG baseball team wins three

Heather Hennessy sets track record

McCalister wins twice to lead tennis team to wins

    By Dick Sparrer

William McCalister won twice at No. 1 singles to start the Los Gatos boys tennis team on the road to a pair of recent 7-0 league victories in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Cats turned back Fremont 7-0, then matched that performance with a 7-0 win over Milpitas a few days later. The two wins helped Gatos improve to 10-2 in the El Camino Division and to 10-4 for the year.

McCalister won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to get Gatos started against Fremont. Greg Faltersack won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, Mark Matulich won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Thomas Helloboid won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.

Ben Kane and Michael Franchi teamed for a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Adam Clark and Matt Falkenhagen won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2, and Chris Choi and Geoff Hubbard won 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 3.

It was more of the same against the Trojans. The Wildcats won five of seven matches in straight sets on the way to the lopsided team win.

McCalister pulled out a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, and Matulich won 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3. But the rest of the matches were all won in straight sets.

    Faltersack won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, and Helleboid won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. Doubles winners were Kane-Franchi (6-1, 6-0), Clark-Falkenhagen (6-4, 6-4) and Choi-Hubbard (6-1, 6-2).

    Golfers win

Sophomore Trevor Branon carded a three-over par 37 at the LaRinconada Country Club to lead the Los Gatos golf team to a 201-213 win over Milpitas in El Camino play.

Junior Eric Hansen fired a 40 to support Branon's effort in the match. Chris McMorrow and Michael Bayne each finished at 41, and Bobby James shot a 42.

The win helped the Wildcats improve to 9-1 in the division and to 10-1 for the year.

The Cats return to the golf course for two league matches against Saratoga this week, visiting the Falcons at the Saratoga Country Club on April 17 and hosting the Falcons at LaRinconada on April 18.

    Split for Wildcats

Nate Sweeters had 39 kills in two matches, but the Los Gatos boys volleyball team could manage just a split in recent SCVAL action.

Sweeters buried 23 kills to lead the Wildcats to a 15-3, 15-8, 11-15, 15-4 win over Fremont.

But the Wildcats lost a tough 13-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-3 decision to first-place Homestead later in the week, despite 16 kills by Sweeters. The Mustangs improved to 4-0 in league and to 23-0 for the year with the win, and the Cats slipped to 4-1 in league and 6-2 for the year.

The Cats will be back in action April 20 when they visit Saratoga for a league match.

    Gatos girls fall

Michelle Barker singled and doubled, but the Los Gatos girls softball team lost a tough 4-1 decision to Mountain View.

The Spartans took the early lead with a run in the second and went up 2-0 with another run in the fourth. Gatos cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Mountain View answered with two in the sixth to clinch the win.

The Cats slipped to 0-6 in the De Anza Division with the loss.
