Los Gatos Weekly-TimesLettersArlie land deal puts different light on golf course In his Letter to the Editor in the April 8 issue of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, George Hall chooses to overlook potential negative impacts Pete Denevi's golf course could have on the "neighborhood." Some of these would be: earth destabilization from massive evacuation (the ancient Black Road landslide), water consumption of 400,000 gallons a day, groundwater depletion/contamination and increased traffic on Bear Creek Road and Highway 17. Recent developments described by Jeff Kearns in the April 8 issue could compound all of the problems associated with the golf course. A major concern is the cumulative impact caused by the plan of Arlie Land and Cattle Co., based in Oregon, to sell homesites and promote logging. Thus the golf course appears just part of a larger scheme which would forever change the Lexington Basin environment if allowed to proceed. Better to save the "neighborhood" by working to create the Bear Creek Redwoods Regional Preserve! Call 354-2963 for more information.
Robert Moncrieff, M.D. Carol Montgomery's story was inspiring The article "Starting Over" by Sandy Sims, in the March 25 edition of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, was very well done. The article was thought-provoking, insightful and a reminder that everything we know as reality could change in a heartbeat. Two days before Christmas in 1974, I left work a couple hours early, filled with the excitement of the holidays. I was hit by a drunk driver just a few blocks from my home. As a survivor of a drunk-driving accident, this article was also very painful for me to read. While society is now demanding some reparation from the tobacco companies for all the pain and suffering their products cause, very little mention is made of the alcohol industry. It is with the same determination and zeal that the distillery companies in America sell their products. Their commercials say we will live fun-filled lives, looking eternally young and beautiful, our lives will be better if we use their products, life is one big party. Where is the party for Carol Montgomery? What kind of party for the parents and families of the thousands killed by drunk drivers yearly in this country? Alcoholism is a disease, and the education of our youth concerning the use/ abuse of alcohol should be carried out with the same zeal as the efforts used to sell alcohol. Carol Montgomery is truly an inspiration. She has made the biggest pitcher of lemonade ever! My heart wishes for her fulfillment of her goals and a pain-free life. Although not one day goes by that I am not in pain from my injuries, my discomfort pales in comparison to what this courageous woman must endure. I felt buoyed by her determination for independence. You go, girl!
