Los Gatos Weekly-TimesCCS Top 8 Track Meet should be a blockbusterGatos boys, girls lose to TitansBy Dick Sparrer It promises to be a blockbuster... two thumbs up! And it's coming soon to a track near you. It's the annual CCS Top 8 Meet, featuring the best high school track and field performers in the Central Coast Section. And the meet should provide track fans with a special sneak preview of the CCS championships coming up in May at San Jose City College. "It's like a CCS finals preview meet," said Los Gatos coach Willie Harmatz of the April 24 event on the Gatos track. "All of the top kids from CCS will be there, as usual." Field events will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday with running events beginning at 5:15 p.m. The admission cost is $5 for adults and $2 for students. Competition will be in the varsity boys' and girls' divisions and in the boys' frosh-soph class. Only those athletes who are among the top eight in an event in the CCS rankings are eligible for the meet. That means Guy McGowan of Leigh will be there, and he should be busy, too. McGowan currently owns the top times in four different events in the CCS--10.90 in the 100 meters, 21.98 in the 200 meters, 14.12 in the 110-meter high hurdles and 37.74 in the 300 intermediate hurdles. The Leigh speedster set two of those CCS standards last weekend at the Hampton-Phillips Classic at San Jose City College. McGowan raced to a win in the 110 high hurdles in 14.12, and he was second in the 200 in 21.98. The Leigh senior added another win in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 54.26. Amy LaPine of Los Gatos will also compete in the Top 8 meet. LaPine's 2:19.31 in the 800 meters is currently the second best mark in CCS. LaPine didn't win the 800 in dual meet action against Gunn last week, but she did race to three victories for the Wildcats. LaPine was first in the 400 meters in 1:00.7, the 1,600 meters in 5:32.2 and the 300 hurdles in 48.2. Still, despite LaPine's efforts, the Wildcats lost a 74-53 decision to the Titans. Sarah High raced to a 2:28.7 win in the 800 for the only other Los Gatos win on the track. Erin Peebles heaved the shot put 28-212 for a Gatos first, and Annie Farnady won the discus with a 93-8 toss. The Gatos boys lost 105-16 to Gunn the same day. Greg Parker took the 3,200 meters in 11:30.7 for the only Los Gatos win of the day.
