      Local students land on Mars

Ever had the desire to visit the big red planet or dreamed of designing a robotic lander/rover that can safely crash-land on a shallow Martian crater and then make its way out again?

About 1,000 elementary through high school age students--including a handful from Los Gatos and Leigh High schools--have accepted this mission to Mars as part of Tech Challenge '97, an annual competition arranged by the Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose.

On April 23, more than 200 teams will operate their devices in front of a panel of judges from 3 to 7 p.m. in the San Jose Civic Auditorium. The event is open to the public. For more information, call 279-7150.
