Ellis, Denues lead Sox to Pony win

    By Dick Sparrer

Relief pitcher Matt Ellis worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, then Charlie Denues drilled a two-run single in the eighth to lead the Red Sox to a 3-1 extra-inning win over the Giants in Los Gatos Pony League baseball play last week.

The game was tied 1-1 in the last of the seventh when Ellis came on in relief with runners on second and third and only one out. He fanned the first hitter he faced before hitting the next batter to load the bags. With the potential winning run on third, Ellis struck out the next hitter to get the Red Sox out of trouble.

The Sox went right to work in the top of the eighth. David Cardinale walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt DiTullio. A.J. Comeau reached on an error to put runners on the corners, then Comeau promptly stole second. Denues then drove in the two runs with a single, and the Sox had a 3-1 lead.

That's all Ellis needed. He retired the side in the bottom of the innings, and the Red Sox had their first win of the young season.

A night later, the Indians ran their record to 4-0 with an 11-4 win over the Cardinals. Woody Wilkerson and Danny Frey combined to throw a three-hitter , leading the Tribe to the victory. Carlos Alonso tripled and singled twice in the win, and Andrew Clark ripped a two-run triple in the fourth.

Kevin Arroyo had two hits for the Cards.

Wilkerson and Frey had teamed to toss a no-hitter for the Indians in a 14-0 win over the Orioles to open the season. Wilkerson had three hits, and Alonso, Clark and Mitchell Benedetti had two each. Frey doubled.

Danny Sullivan went the distance twice to lead the Cardinals to back-to-back wins over the White Sox and Mets.

Sullivan struck out 10 and allowed just four hits in an 8-0 win over the White Sox. Sullivan and Patrick McClain had two hits each in the win. Nick Politi had two hits for the Sox.

Sullivan fanned nine and flipped a two-hitter in a 17-3 win over the Mets. Sullivan, Arroyo and Kyle Jury had two hits each in the win.

Steve Genetti went the distance to fire a two-hitter for the Orioles in a 7-2 win over the Red Sox. Bradley Tomy homered and doubled for the O's, Raymond Salazar and Bobby Kent had two hits apiece, and Grant Kehrig doubled.

Wilkerson singled and homered and was the winning pitcher for the Indians in an 8-4 win over the Giants. Matt Cisowski threw three strong innings in the win, and Clark had two hits. Zack Sylvester doubled for the Giants.

David Martini clubbed a two-run triple in the first and a three-run homer in the seventh to lead the Braves to a 15-4 win over the Cubs; Forrest Gallien tripled twice and was the winning pitcher, Reece Behren singled and tripled and Justin Schafer doubled for the Mets in a 13-6 win over the White Sox. Marty Mullins had three hits and was the winning pitcher for the Cubs in a 7-2 win over the Cards.
