Wildcats play for volleyball title, then host tournament

    By Dick Sparrer

It's a big week that faces the Los Gatos boys volleyball team.

Not only will the Wildcats host their own tournament on Saturday in the Los Gatos High School gym, but they will play Homestead in a regular season match on Wednesday night ... a match that will decide the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) championship.

The Wildcats, who rolled over Wilcox 15-1, 15-3, 15-1 last week, can clinch the league title with a win over the Mustangs on April 24, 7 p.m. Homestead has lost just once in league play, but that loss came against the Cats, who are 9-0 in the SCVAL.

Los Gatos dominated Wilcox in a league match last week, giving just five points in the three-game sweep.

"We rolled over Wilcox," said Gatos coach Jack. "We only allowed five points over the course of three quick games. All 12 of the healthy members of the Los Gatos squad contributed in this win."

Junior standout Shaun Sullivan led the Wildcats with 12 kills in the win. Neil Perry, Trevor Christiansen and Brady Smith supported with six kills each, and Mason McKown and Fletcher Anderson added five apiece.

Sullivan, Anderson and Perry shared the team lead in service aces with five each, and Michael Conry was close behind with four.

The Wildcats were to host Santa Clara in a Tuesday night tune-up before heading to Homestead on Wednesday.

The Cats, 27-4 for the year, will be back in the LG gym on Saturday to host many of the top teams from the Central Coast Section in the Los Gatos Varsity Invitational.

Volleyball action in the 16-team tourney begins Saturday at 8 a.m., with the Cats hosting Bear Valley, Bellarmine, Harbor, Homestead, Mitty, Mt. Madonna, Pleasant Valley, Serra, San Lorenzo Valley, Saratoga, Soquel, St. Francis, St. Lawrence Academy, Willow Glen and Valley Christian.

Admission to the tournament is free.
