Honda, Dreesman drive in key runs for Padres
By Dick Sparrer
Ryan Honda and Chip Dreesman each delivered at just the right time for the Padres. And it turned out to be just the wrong time for the Pirates in the major division of the Los Gatos Little League.
Honda's clutch two-run single helped the Padres nail a 3-2 win over the Pirates, and Dreesman singled home the game-winning run when the Pads beat the Bucs 6-5 later in the week.
The two wins helped the Padres remain in a first-place tie with the Cubs in the major division race. Both clubs were 6-1 heading into play last week.
Jason Stein went the distance to toss a seven-hitter for the Padres against the Pirates, but the Bucs were still up 2-0 after three innings.
The Pads went to work in the fourth, though. Charlie Denues and Stein each singled before David Pavicich bounced into a fielder's choice, forcing Stein at second. Dreesman singled home a run, and Sam Dickinson followed with a hit to load the bases.
Honda then delivered a clutch single to drive in two runs to give his club the lead.
Stein, who struck out six in the game, went on to nail down the win.
Brett Hrouskup doubled in the win for the Padres.
Steven Genetti, who tossed three no-hit innings to open the game for the Pirates, had two hits in the loss. Danny Frey also had two hits, and Justin Schafer doubled.
The Pirates took a 2-0 lead later in the week on a single by Schafer and a two-run homer by Dylan Burke and, were up 5-2 after three.
But the Padres scored two in the fifth on a two-run homer by Pavicich to cut the lead to 5-4, then scored two in the sixth to win it.
Nick Elias singled, and Eric McDonald walked with two out. Stein reached on an error before Pavicich walked to force home the tying run. Dreesman then won it with a hard liner.
Dickinson tripled in the game for the Padres.
The Cubs won a couple of close games to remain tied for first, beating the Cardinals 4-2 and 5-3.
Marty Mullins flipped a five-hitter, fanning nine and walking just one, to lead the Cubs to the 4-2 win over the Cards.
Wesley Howell had two hits in the win, including a two-run single in the third that gave the Cubs the lead.
Forrest Gallien singled and doubled for the Cards.
Mullins was three-for-three, and Howell and Louis Santoro each singled and doubled for the Cubbies.
Woody Wilkerson and Rusty Wall each doubled for the Cards.
The Indians remained just a half game behind the leaders at 5-1 with a 6-2 win over the Yankees.
Danny Brassfield and Matt Perrone each doubled, and they combined to pitch the Indians to the win over the Yanks.
The Marlins beat the Giants twice, 10-5 and 3-1.
Derrick Fredericks doubled twice, Colby Moore had two hits and scored three runs, and Scott Sanders doubled in a run in the 10-5 Marlins victory.
A.J. Comeau had two hits for the Giants. Will Kapp tripled, and Evan Bolton doubled.
Moore doubled, and Joseph Defever slapped a clutch run-scoring single to lead the Marlins past the Giants 3-1.
Danny Sullivan's seventh-inning homer sparked the A's to a 3-1 win over the Rangers. Blake Dietrich doubled in the win.
Navneet Hakhu singled and doubled for the Rangers.
Sullivan was the winning pitcher and also had three hits in a 6-5 A's win over the Rangers earlier in the week. Dietrich singled and tripled, and Nick Kalpin doubled twice for the A's.
Daniel Langhoff singled and tripled, Cody Sanford had two hits, and Garrett Blackwell tripled for the Rangers.
The Pirates had opened the week with a rousing 22-2 win over the Rangers.
Mitchelle Benedetti was five-for-five with a pair of doubles and Frey was an impressive four-for-six with three doubles. Schafer singled, doubled twice and tripled, Burke doubled and singled twice to knock in four runs, Genetti tripled and singled twice, Daniel Silva singled and doubled to plate three runs and Blake Morrison had two hits.
Los Gatos Little League major division standings as of Saturday, April 15-- Cubs 6-1, Padres 6-1, Indians 5-1, A's 4-2, Marlins 3-4, Pirates 3-4, Yankees 2-4, Rangers 2-5, Cardinals 1-5, Giants 1-6.
