Los Gatos Weekly-TimesMain StreetMary Ann CookThere was nothing simple about this celebrationSIMPLIFY AT 55: This phrase is Sue Tuttle's current motto, so she thought she was going to a birthday party with that theme when she and her husband, Nick, headed for the home of Joanne and Joe Rodgers on a recent Saturday. But the party that awaited her was anything but simple. In fact, it included a marching band, with the 63 guests in the vanguard, ascending the hill to the Rodgers' house. Guests assembled behind Los Gatos High School to caravan, then walked the last half-mile. The honoree wondered why the band was practicing nearby but didn't think it had anything to do with her until she spotted her son, Jeff Tuttle, presumed to be in London. Instead of simplicity, she got a three-ring circus with games, photographer Paul Tumason playing "Happy Birthday" on the accordian, a cake with a carousel and a tanzanite ring from Nairobi. The whole idea was Gloria LeBlanc's, with Joanne as co-conspirator. FAST DRAW: Another face with a broad smile on it these days is that of Tim Musselman, who won the Northern California regional sandwich-making contest sponsored by Togo's. Musselman made three different Togo sandwiches in 02:48.3 minutes. Talk about fast food! He beat out 18 other Togo employees, won $250 and competed in the California finals, but he wasn't a top finisher in that one. In a byproduct of the contest, Togos donated 100 sandwiches made during the competition to the Second Harvest Food Bank. HONORED: Live Oak Senior Nutrition and Service Center recognized its volunteers at an Open House and Volunteer Appreciation luncheon on a recent Sunday at the center at 19 High School Court, Los Gatos. Among those honored was Lolo Walker, who won the 1998 Meals on Wheels Volunteer of the Year award sponsored by Reynolds Metals Co. and ProjectMeal Foundation. Some 140 volunteers throughout the U.S. were selected for the award. Lolo works every day at the center serving lunches and fills in for the driver of MoW when needed. Also receiving special recognition were the husband-and-wife team of Russ and Louise Wintle. The Wintles are 94 and 88 respectively, and they come to the center about twice a week, not to be waited upon but to serve. Martha Carlisle and Maxine Hybarger, former board members who continue to work at the center, were also spotlighted. SHOWCASE: The Symphony Showcase Preview Party is May 7, 6-10 p.m. Limos will take guests from the Rinconada Hills clubhouse to the Saratoga showcase home for the preview. After the viewing, it's back by limo to the clubhouse for a no-host bar, a buffet, a silent auction, champagne and cake. Marilyn Lattanzio of Los Gatos is co-chair of the preview. Tickets are $60, and proceeds benefit the San Jose Symphony. Reservations must be made by May 1; call 378-2151. The showcase itself runs from May 9 to June 7, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at 18450 Sobey Road. It's closed Mondays, except Memorial Day, and open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays. WOMEN'S AGLOW: The healing of women is the subject of Pastor Cal Cook's talk at the Los Gatos History Club May 5, 6:30-9 p.m. Pastor Cook is from Cathedral of Faith. Women's Aglow is the sponsor; Judy Borst is president. Call 578-2211. GO, GIRLS!: U Go Girls is the name of the rowing camp sponsored by the Los Gatos Rowing Club over spring break. This is the first community outreach to be sponsored by LGRC. Club members Dani Nedom of Los Gatos and Rosemary Adamson of Saratoga teamed five girls from St. Andrew's School in Saratoga with 11 girls from Luther Burbank Junior High School in San Jose to teach them the advantages of team effort. The girls themselves named the camp. The idea is to introduce at-risk youngsters to the sport of rowing and to give them an opportunity to work with others of different ethnic and economic backgrounds to accomplish mutually beneficial goals. Western Mountaineering, Athletic Performance, Screen Designs and the LG Athletic Club all donated to this event. ART RECEPTION: A reception for the artists chosen for the 1998 Open Juried Show at the Los Gatos Museum of Fine Art will be held May 3, 1-4 p.m. Dale Laitinen, landscape painter from Mt. Ranch, was the judge. ITALIAN ARTIST: Painter Sergio Scatizzi and his paintings will be at Martino's Interiors May 7-9. Scatizzi is the only living painter whose work has been exhibited at the Pitti Palace in Florence. COMMEMORATIVE TREE: Friends of Denis Giordano, longtime Los Gatan who died recently, will plant a tree in his honor, hopefully at Fairview Park near his home. If you'd like to donate to this memorial, call Tim Boyer of the parks and recreation department at 399-5777. RETIREMENT ROAST: A communitywide Retirement Roast will be held for retirees of Los Gatos High School May 31, noon-5 p.m. To be honored (and roasted) are principal Ted Simonson, vice principal Al Simon and teachers Jack Cody, Florence Bell, Paul Bostwick, Judy Bingham and Burt Donolan. Alum president Sandy Paulson Moore, coordinator, is seeking time, talent and money from other alums. Call 354-1512 to volunteer.
