Gatos girls chase Lancers

Wildcats win a pair in division

Can anyone catch St. Francis in the race for the girls' softball title in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this spring?

The Los Gatos Wildcats would like to think so. And they'd like to think it just might be them.

The Cats certainly played like contenders last week, beating Homestead 6-2 and Wilcox 4-3 in eight innings to remain hot on the heels of the Lancers to race for first place. Gatos is now 5-1 in division play, and St. Francis is 7-0.

Gillian Wadas had three hits to drive in a pair of wins, and Nancy Mills tossed a four-hitter to lead the Wildcats to the exciting victory over Wilcox.

The Cats fell back 3-0 when the Chargers scored single runs in the first, third and fourth, but Gatos tied it with three runs in the fifth, then won it with a run in the eighth. Courtney Radonich and Iming Lin slapped two hits apiece for the winners, and Chelsea Hayes ripped a double.

Mills, now 11-2 for the year, had picked up a pitching win earlier in the week in the 6-2 win over the Mustangs. Mills tossed five scoreless innings for the Wildcats.

Jamie Barclay homered and tripled for Gatos in the win, and Juli Fomenko blasted a triple.

Los Gatos is now 14-4-1 for the year.

Leigh, meanwhile, split in league play last week to slip to 4-2-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Longhorns, who later lost to Del Mar in the Strikker Tournament, are now 15-6-1 for the year.

Kim Rose tossed a six-hitter to lead the Longhorns to a 5-4 win over Westmont to open the week. Dani Juarez, Samantha Alford and Carly Brotherton slapped two hits each for Leigh.

But the Longhorns lost a tough 5-4 decision to Santa Teresa in 10 innings later in the week. Rose was stuck with the tough pitching loss.

Cora-Lee Rogers doubled and singled twice for the Longhorns, and Rose had two hits.

Leigh lost 3-2 to Del Mar in the Strikker Tournament despite a four-hitter by Rose. Jen McGrath tripled for the Longhorns.

Cats net two wins

The Los Gatos boys' tennis team won twice last week to improve to push its record to 4-5 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

Senior standout Al Anzoategui won twice at No. 1 singles to lead the Cats to a 5-2 win over Milpitas and a 6-1 victory over Santa Clara.

Anzoategui won 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot in the team win over the Trojans. David Stege won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Brandon Rockwell won 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3. Freshman Ross Livingston won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4, and Brandon Fong and Jason Felix teamed for a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Anzoategui came back with a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles to start the Wildcats on the road to a 6-1 win over the Bruins. Rockwell won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, Livingston 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 and sophomore Kevin Pilger 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.

Freshmen Ben Kane and Marc Matulich combined for a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, and Fong and Chris Choi won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Golfers ace Gunn

The Los Gatos golf team pulled out a one-stroke thriller against Gunn last week to improve its record to 9-1-1 for the year.

The Wildcats edged the Titans 213-214 in the league match at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course. Marcia Wallis led the Cats with a 40, and Kyle Detrick was close behind at 42. Sean McIntyre fired a 43, and Matt Cuevas and Gavin Stavis each shot a 44.

Cuevas and Stavis had each fired a three-over par 37 a couple of days earlier in a 204-226 win over Santa Clara at LaRinconada Country Club. Stapleton shot a 42, Wallis a 43 and McIntyre a 45.

Cats win a pair

The Los Gatos boys' volleyball team won a pair of matches last week to improve to 10-0 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Wildcats, now an impressive 23-1 for the year, whipped Del Mar 15-4, 15-7, 15-9 and handled Valley Christian 15-5, 15-3, 14-16, 15-1.

Leigh, meanwhile, split a couple of matches in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL. The Longhorns beat Prospect 14-16, 15-1, 15-4, 15-10 but lost to Saratoga 5-15, 15-8, 15-12, 15-12. Leigh is 8-2 in league and 9-5 for the year.
