The Prowler

What is it about the first week in May that has everyone planning special events? Perhaps because May is the last month before the long, hot summer commences--although it seems like we barely got started with true spring.

Speaking of special events, the Prowler thinks anyone hoping to impress a "significant interest" should do so May 1, also called May Day. Although old European tradition included dancing around May poles, that can be impractical. Try a simpler tradition: place a May Day bouquet of flowers at your S.I.'s door, then leave so he or she finds the surprise later.

Here are some other ideas to start the month off right. On May 2, the Los Gatos Parent Nursery School presents its 10th annual Children's Fantasy Faire, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Los Gatos High School lawn.

The fest includes games, 4-H animals, crafts, food, drinks, raffles, antics by Homer the Clown and tunes by musician Gary Lapow. Admission is free; tickets to Homer's show are $3.50. Cost of food varies, with proceeds benefiting the school. Call 354-1433 for info.

On May 3, the Health Trust and the Los Gatos Kiwanis Club sponsor the 12th annual Tortoise and Hare 10K Race and 5K Walk. Proceeds support Meals on Wheels, which delivers balanced meals to elderly or disabled clients. Call 451-1832 for details.

Finally, on May 5, the Marie Rose Guild of Los Gatos' Sisters of the Holy Names convent holds its annual Strawberry Luncheon to raise funds for the care of elderly and infirm sisters. The event includes hors d'oeuvres, punch, lunch, door prizes and, of course, fresh spring strawberries. Call 395-2868 for ticket info and reservations.
