Leigh's McGowan, LG's LaPine star in the rugged CCS Top 8 Meet

By Dick Sparrer

The best track and field athletes from the Central Coast Section were in Los Gatos for the 18th annual CCS Top 8 Meet last Friday night.

But some of the best athletes didn't have to travel too far to get there.

Guy McGowan of Leigh and Amy LaPine of Los Gatos were among the best in the field, and they proved it with outstanding performance at the prestigious meet.

McGowan raced to three victories for the Longhorns, winning the 100 meters in 10.5, the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.53 and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 38.75.

LaPine led a solid Los Gatos showing with a second-place finish in the girls' 800 meters in 2:16.9. The time was the second-best recorded this year in the CCS and ranks fifth on the Los Gatos all-time list in the event. It was LaPine's lifetime best in the event.

"She's having a great season," said Los Gatos coach Willie Harmatz of the talented junior.

Senior Sarah High also recorded a lifetime best, running 11:32.8 to finish fifth in the 3,200 meters. The time ranks fifth on the LG all-time list.

Freshman Emily King soared 16-8 14 to finish fifth in the long jump for the Wildcats.

"She just missed our all-time list by an inch," said Harmatz. "She's our newest rising star."

The Wildcats also had two place third in the frosh-soph division. Freshman Jeff Hoeft was third in the 800 meters 2:02.4, and sophomore Zach Regner was third in the mile in 4:31.2.

"Both [of] these guys are going to be great," said Harmatz.

The Gatos coach also expected big things from Rusty Martin in the frosh-soph two-mile.

Martin didn't place, but it wasn't his fault. The lights went out at the stadium before the frosh-soph two-mile could be run.

"He was seeded third, and he was ready," said Harmatz. "He was going to have a great race, but then the lights went out."

Los Gatos will host Saratoga on April 30, 3 p.m., in the last dual meet of the year before taking part in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League finals on May 5 at De Anza College.
