Martin Fishman heads opthalmology group
The California Association of Ophthalmology named Los Gatos resident Martin L. Fishman as its president for 1997.
A clinical professor at Stanford University and co-director of the Eye Pathology Laboratory, Fishman has practiced ophthalmology for 20 years and serves as chief of the medical staff at Community Hospital of Los Gatos.
Fishman has served in other positions in the association for several years. He is a councilor of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the Santa Clara County Medical Association and the California Medical Association. He earned his medical degree from the UC-San Francisco Medical School and holds a master's degree in health services administration from St. Mary's College in Moraga.
Spectrum Eye Center office opens a clinic
A new Low Vision Clinic, designed to help the visually impaired, has been opened by Spectrum Eye Centers in their offices at 431 Monterey Ave.
Low vision is a serious loss of vision that cannot be corrected by medical or surgical procedures. One in nine persons age 65 or older is severely impaired visually, according to Julia Ngan, O. D., in charge of the low-vision program.
Examinations, prescriptions and traditional optical aids such as special glasses and magnifiers are provided. In addition the clinic offers training in the use of high-tech visual aids. The clinic has a VIP (Versatile Imaging Processor) reading system, from J. Bliss Imaging Systems in Santa Clara, capable of scanning books and newspapers onto a 15-inch monitor. Users control the font size needed for their vision level, or they can choose to have the computer read the material aloud.
Visual impairment is common among older persons primarily because of four major eye diseases associated with the aging process--macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.
While the Low Vision Clinic cannot restore sight, it provides visual aids and teaches people to use their remaining sight more effectively.
