Volunteers needed for various committees
The town of Los Gatos seeks volunteers to fill nine vacancies on Town Council- appointed committees. Five appointments must be made to the Arts Commission, one to the county Council on Aging, two to the Library Board, one to the Personnel Board and one to the Redevelopment Advisory Committee.
Applicants must reside in the town. The deadline to apply is June 16. Pick up applications in the Town Clerk's offices, 110 E. Main Street.
Jiffy Lube approved
By a 5-2 vote, Jiffy Lube won Planning Commission approval April 23 to open a new store at 15551 Union Ave.
Mike Abkin and Leonard Pacheco dissented after voicing concerns about traffic and circulation related to the drive-through lube shop.
Marcia Jensen also expressed concern that the shop would be the equivalent of a fast-food operation--something some planners have already objected to building along Los Gatos Boulevard--but eventually voted for approval of the shop.
Commissioner Laura Nachison said she was convinced that Jiffy Lube would be a good neighbor and that its circulation plan would be sufficient. She made the motion to approve the shop.
The three-bay, 3,681-square-foot facility will service an average of 25 to 60 cars a day, seven days a week.
Paid parking resurfaces
At its May 5 meeting, the Town Council will once again discuss paid parking on town-owned lots.
The discussion will include the matters of incorporating valet parking into the downtown parking plan and allowing private parking lot owners to likewise charge for parking or valet services.
The council temporarily set the matter aside Feb. 3 when downtown merchants asked the town to help them arrange for construction of underground parking at Old Town, rather than implement fees. That project is currently in limbo because high water made the underground garage impossible.
