Summer sports camps coming to Los Gatos

      By Dick Sparrer

It's just about summer camp time. And for those youngsters who would rather pitch baseballs than pitch tents, or who would prefer to shoot a basketball than shoot a bow and arrow, there are plenty of camps right here in the area.

      Basketball camps

The Los Gatos Wildcat Summer Basketball Camp returns to the high school gym on June 16-20 with sessions for players ages 7-12 and 13-15.

The camps, held under the direction of Jim Marino, head coach of the successful basketball program at Los Gatos High, will emphasize fundamentals in shooting, passing, dribbling, defense and team play. There will be drills and games each day, and appearances by guest coaches from throughout the Bay Area.

Players ages 7-12 will attend from 9 a.m.-noon and will be grouped by age level and ability level. The cost is $80 per player ($125 for two family members).

Players ages 13-15 will attend the camp from 1-3 p.m., and the cost is $50 per player.

Each session will be limited to 60 players. For information, call Marino at 354-2730, ext. 269.

      Wrestling camps

Youth wrestling camps return to Los Gatos for the eighth straight year under the direction of Scott Downs, a former Gatos head wrestling coach who remains involved in the program at the high school.

Camps are slated for June 16-20 (beginners to intermediates, ages 7-12) and June 23-27 (advanced, ages 11-16, with at least junior high school experience).

The cost is $100 per wrestler, and camp hours are 1:30-4:30 p.m. each day in the wrestling room at the high school. Each session is limited to 26 wrestlers.

The camp will feature instruction from Downs and Jeff Garlick, the head coach at Fisher Middle School. Wrestlers from the Los Gatos High School program will also assist.

For information, call Downs at 395-8126 or 354-2730, ext. 259.

      Williams hoop camp

The annual Sid Williams Basketball Camp returns to Fisher Middle School July 14-18. The camp is designed for "motivated players" entering the fifth-ninth grades.

Session 1 for boys and girls entering the fifth and sixth grades will be held 1-3:30 p.m. each day, and players entering the seventh-ninth grades will attend Session 2 from 4-7 p.m.

      SC Baseball School

Santa Clara University baseball coaches Mike Cummins and Lou Lucas will host their annual Santa Clara Baseball School with three sessions set for June and July for players ages 9-16.

Session I runs from June 23-27 with Session II set for July 7-11 The camp covers basic fundamentals and hitting from 9 a.m.-noon, with a special pitching session from 1-2:30 p.m. The cost is $100 for the morning session and $50 for the pitching session.

The school features individualized instruction in playing defense, base running, sliding and hitting. Each camper receives a t-shirt and Bronco caps will be given to contest winners.
