Kalpin homers twice to lead A's to Little League victory

Cubs beat Red Sox twice to remain unbeaten

    By Dick Sparrer

Nick Kalpin found the friendly confines of Baggerly Field not so confining last weekend.

The slugger belted a pair of homers out of the park on Saturday to lead the A's to a 10-1 win over the Yankees in major division play in the Los Gatos Little League.

Kalpin cracked a two-run homer in the fourth and ripped a three-run homer in the fifth to lead the A's to their second win in the week over the Yanks. The A's had beaten the Yankees 7-6 in a thriller the Monday before.

Jackson Dallas doubled and singled twice in the game for the A's and he also tossed three shutout innings to get the pitching win. He struck out five and allowed just one hit.

Kyle Weiss tripled and singled twice, Daniel Ouellet doubled and singled and Corey Lanagan had two hits.

Kevin Connelly had two hits, including a solo homer in the sixth, to lead the Yanks at the plate.

On Monday, the A's scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to pull out a 7-6 win over the Yankees. Kyle Weiss opened the sixth with a single but was forced at second by Kalpin. Dallas ended up singling home Kalpin with the game-winning run.

Dallas struck out six in three innings and Kalpin fanned five over the final three as they tossed the A's to the win. Kalpin had two hits and Ouellet tripled in a run in the fourth.

Michael Scales had three hits for the Yanks and Joe Pierce tossed three strong innings in the loss.

The Cubs ran their record to 9-0 with back-to-back wins over the Red Sox, thanks to the solid pitching of Paul Politi, K.C. Silva and Andrew Gomez.

Each hurler flipped two innings in a 5-2 win over the Sox to open the week. Politi singled and doubled and Gomez singled and tripled to lead the bat attack.

Garrett Blackwell had two hits for the Red Sox.

Gomez, Politi and Caleb Larson had two hits each and Silva doubled and scored three runs for the Cubs in an 8-1 win over the Red Sox on Saturday.

Blackwell doubled and Craig Olsen had two hits for the Sox.

The Red Sox had beaten the Giants 16-5 the Sunday before. Olsen tossed three innings to get the pitching win, and Blackwell and Tim Garvey had two hits apiece. Kiko Alonso was 3-for-3 with a double, Tim Trobbe had two hits and Chad Mardesich doubled for the Giants.

Steven Zavodnick and Nick Hirschman tossed three innings apiece to lead the Braves to a 9-3 win over the Tigers. Hirschman singled and doubled and Kyle Johnson tripled in the win.

Geo Shannon singled and doubled and Blake Morrison doubled for the Tigers.

Zavodnick and Hirschman had flipped three innings each earlier in the week in a 7-4 Braves win over the Tigers. Zavodnick, who struck out seven in his stint, had two hits, and Nick Elias was 3-for-3 with a double.

Kevin Danser had two hits and Morrison doubled for the Tigers.

Kiko Alonso tossed three innings to get the win, fanning six, and also doubled and singled twice to lead the Giants to a 7-3 win over the Cardinals. Robbie Comeau added two hits.

Danny Wall doubled for the Cards.

Alonzo had gone three innings to get the pitching win, striking out six, and Trobbe, Matt Horton, Mardesich and Bryan Rose had two hits each for the Giants in a 10-5 win over the Cardinals. Sean Collins ripped a two-run double.

Wall doubled and singled twice in the loss.

The Cards were coming off an 11-9 win over the Reds. Brett Litle struck out 10 in six innings on the hill to get the win. Wall singled and tripled and David Burkhart had two hits.

Chris Shelton singled and doubled and Hamilton Fairburn and Matt Fumia each had two hits for the Reds.

The Indians rolled to a 12-4 win over the Reds last Friday night. Nathan Burke and Karl Winkleman tossed three innings apiece in the win. Winkleman belted three hits, and Marc Tonkel, Lucas deMilo, Chris Bitter and Clayton Susick had two hits each. Bitter had a double.

Travis Bonner singled and tripled and Brian Comstock had two hits for the Reds.
