A bench for Shirley
Antiquarium co-owner and longtime volunteer Shirley Henderson was fêted for her 70th birthday, when community members pitched in to purchase a bench in her honor. The bench, located in front of Icing on the Cake on W. Main Street, bears a plaque in Henderson's name. According to Greg Stowers, chairman of the board for the Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce, Henderson's friend Janet Gutierrez came up with the idea. 'Shirley exemplifies to us the best of volunteerism in the town,' Gutierrez said. Henderson didn't want gifts for her birthday, but her friends wanted to do something nonetheless. 'It was something that she would appreciate but at the same time it wasn't just a token gift,' Stowers said, adding that Henderson is a driving force behind the town's Adopt-a-Bench program. Stowers asked the community for donations, and town council members, Chamber of Commerce beautification committee members and business owners donated various amounts to install the bench. The bench installation and a celebration took place on April 11.
