NEWS BRIEFS

Trash rate hearing postponed to June

The public hearing on rate hikes for Los Gatos garbage service, originally scheduled for the May 6 Town Council meeting, has been postponed.

Green Valley recently handed over the final pages of its voluminous rate-change application last week. Now, the rate review committee that negotiates with the company on behalf of four cities has to sift through the information and recommend action.

Los Gatos Community Services Director Regina Falkner, who is the town's representative on the rate review committee, said all four municipalities should have a report in time to hold public hearings in June.

Postal workers stamp out hunger

Los Gatos residents can help feed those in need by leaving nonperishable canned food next to the mailbox on Saturday, May 11. Letter carriers will pick up canned food donations that day and deliver them to Second Harvest Food Bank.

Planners rule against housing news.briefson University

A residential tract at 742 University Ave. would be innappropriate, the town Planning Commission decided April 24, giving the The Riding Group a unanimous thumbs-down.

The Riding Group wanted to build 23 houses on the 3.1-acre lot.

Commissioner Michael Abkin later said high-density development might be more likely to be approved. The land is the former site of Woodworker's Lumberyard and Millworks.

Planners said the light industrial uses permitted in LM zones are needed in that neighborhood more than houses. Such uses would include retail shops, dry cleaners, towing companies and plumbers.

Jim Riding, director of marketing for The Riding Group, said the company is still looking at its options.
