We should find another way to describe people
In response to your recent article on Census 2000:
It is hard for me to believe that in the year 2001 we are still driving the largest divide between the "white" population and the "black" population. All descriptions in the census, in magazine articles, surveys, you name it, are broken down like this:
- Black (a color)
- White (a color)
- Asian (a geographic designation)
- Hispanic (a geographic designation--of Spanish descent)
You get the idea. Only two are by color.
I look forward to the day when we use one system or the other to describe groups of people. It's a place to start, an important place.

Americans should fear doctors more than gun owners
This letter is in regard to the recent article on distasteful gun ownership. I offer the following information:
- Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year--120,000
- Accidental deaths per physician--0.17 (U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services)
- Number of gun owners in the U.S.--80,000,000
- Number of accidental gun deaths per year--1,500
- Accidental deaths per gun owner = 0.0000188 (U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms)
You are approximately 9,000 times more likely to be killed by a doctor than a gun owner. Makes you wonder.

Cat story brings problem to light
The article about Gato the cat was a pleasure to read. With so many cats being abandoned because of people moving on and relocating, it is a very hard time for cats. Dogs are easier to control in their breeding habits and too many people neglect to do the right thing, such as spaying and neutering. Then, when it is too late, after they have bred, they are abandoned. They cannot survive.
Thanks to people like Carin and Chris, some cats will have a life. Thank you for a very touching article.

Corrections
The name of Hillbrook School Headmistress Sarah Bayne was misspelled in an April 25 editorial in the Los Gatos Weekly-Times.
In the April 25 issue of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, the article on the St. Luke's Garden Tour incorrectly stated that a portion of the tour's proceeds benefit maintenance of the church's grounds. Proceeds actually benefit just the four organizations listed in the article: Live Oak Adult Day Care Center, A Place for Teens, Santa Maria Urban Mission and Georgia Travis/Inn Vision Women's Shelter.
