Los Gatos boys run to 6-0 track season
By Dick Sparrer
Illness and a choir concert may have taken their toll on the Los Gatos girls track team last week, but there was nothing standing in front of the Gatos boys as they raced to a win over Gunn to complete a perfect dual meet season.
Los Gatos outran Gunn 79-43 to finish 6-0 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. It marks the first unbeaten season since 1993 for the LG boys, who are led by coaches Willie Harmatz and Dave Hay.
The girls weren't so lucky. With superstars Annie Farnady and Aly Chavez among the seven missing athletes, the Gatos girls lost a 68-51 decision to the Titans to wind up 6-1 for the year.
"We can still win the league this week," admitted LG coach Willie Harmatz, who leads his squad into the finals on Thursday at the De Anza Community College track.
The boys, though, have already run to the title, and it was Brian Edwards, Matt Bates, Seung Lee, Tomas Viramontes and Peter Baunach leading the Cats to the championship-clinching win.
Edwards, Bates, Lee and Viramontes were each double winners for the Wildcats, and Baunach won the high jump with a personal best 6-2.
Edwards took the triple jump with a personal best 42-1 and added a win in the 200 meters in 23.10, with Jeff Hoeft second in 23.8. Edwards was also third in the 100 in 11.22.
Bates was first in the 400 meters in 51.1, with Matt Hintz third in 52.43, and Bates also led a Gatos sweep in the 800 meters, finishing first in 2:01.86, with Tomas Viramontes second in 2:03.1 and Hoeft third in 2:08.8.
Viramontes was a winner in the 2-mile in 10:28, with Greg Tolan second in 10:48, and he took the mile in 4:39.1, with Darren Key second in 4:43.1 and Tolan third in 4:51.6.
Lee breezed to a victory in the 110 high hurdles in 15.62 and he added a first in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 42.63, with Payam Mokhtari third in 44.79.
Baunach soared to a win in the high jump with his 6-2 effort, and Eric Medefesser nailed second at 5-8.
Nick Skrabe whirled the discus 126-5 for a first, with Rick Esparza third at 113-3, and Skrabe added a second in the shot put at 42-10 1/2, with Nick McAlpine third at 42-2.
Ben Frasier flew to a second in the long jump at 18-9 1/2, with Stone Hsu third at 18-1.
The girls didn't fare quite as well.
Racine Lewin won a pair of events, taking the 100 low hurdles in 16.58, with Kristen Turner second in 17.14 and winning the 300 lows in 48.74, with Turner second in 52.69.
Lynsey Erickson was first in the long jump with a personal best 17-1 1/4, and she added a third in the triple jump at 32-10 1/2.
Heather Hennessy raced to a win in the 800 meters in 2:17.58, with Michelle Beritzhoff second in 2:22.3, and Beritzhoff came back with a second in the mile in 5:19.1.
Carolyn Penner was first in the 400 in 60.9, and Mallory Thornton took the 2-mile in 12:04.0.
Heather Davis was second in the discus with a toss of 85-11 and third in the shot put at 26-5. Sandy Runyan was second in the shot at 27-1.
Natasha Wilder, Karen Rossmassler, Beritzhoff and Maya Stevens each topped the high jump bar at 4-8 to tie for third.
McCalister wins title
William McCalister had to win six sets of tennis to claim the singles title in the El Camino Division. He did just that last week. And it only took him seven sets to do it.
McCalister won two matches in straight sets before going three sets in the finals to clinch the league crown.
The Los Gatos tennis star, who has been playing No. 1 singles all season for the Cats, opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win and followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the semifinals.
McCalister wrapped up the title with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-0 win over an opponent from Milpitas in the championship round.
In doubles play, Adam Clark and Matt Falkenhagen played a Santa Clara twosome close, but lost in three sets in first-round play. The Gatos pair lost 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 to the two Bruins.
Cats top Spartans
Nate Sweeters hammered down 10 kills to lead the Los Gatos boys volleyball team to a 15-5, 15-2, 15-11 win over Mountain View. The Wildcats are now 5-1 in the SCVAL.
The Cats will host Fremont on May 2 and visit Homestead on May 4 in a couple of 7 p.m. matches to close out the regular season.
A week before beating Mountain View, the Wildcats turned back Saratoga 12-15, 15-9, 15-4, 15-10. Greg Belvins led the Cats with 16 kills and Sweeters supported with 13.
The Cats made it to the quarterfinals of the Fremont Firebird Invitational, beating Hiram Johnson of Sacramento. But Gatos lost 15-9, 6-15, 15-10 to Valley Christian to face elimination.
