25th running of the Cats Hill
By Dick Sparrer
The streets of town will be closed this weekend for a special silver anniversary celebration--it will be the 25th running of the rugged Cats Hills Criterium Cycling Classic on May 8 in downtown Los Gatos.
Thrilling bicycle action will run from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., with the racing hub at the start-finish line at Tait and Nicholson.
World Champion and three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond, Olympian Eric Heiden and former National Champion Wayne Stetina are just a few of the biking greats who have participated in the Cats Hill, named for the menacing 23 percent, 100-meter grade on the 1-mile loop.
The race features divisions for all riders from professionals to novice riders.
The event, hosted each year by the Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club, will also feature a vendor booth promenade, bike demonstrations, food and live music.
The Los Gatos Bicycle Racing Club is a non-profit organization committed to developing junior bicycle racing for young people (ages 10-18) in the area. A percentage of this year's race proceeds will benefit Communities Against Substance Abuse.
For more information, visit the club's Web site at http://members.aol.com/lgbrc/ for the race schedule.
