Sisters of Holy Names host the Strawberry Luncheon

The local Sisters of the Holy Names convent and their Marie Rose Guild host their annual Strawberry Luncheon benefit on May 27 at the convent, 200 Prospect Ave. in Los Gatos.

The Marie Rose Guild, made up of lay women, was formed more than 40 years ago to assist the Sisters of the Holy Names in its charitable and educational work. The guild's particular focus now is helping with fundraising to benefit the elderly and infirm sisters of the convent.

The event begins at 11:45 a.m. with hors d'oeuvres on the patio, followed by lunch in the dining room. The afternoon also includes a crafts market with handmade items for sale, anniversary door prizes and an auction drawing for "goodie baskets." Strawberries are, of course, part of the menu.

The significance of the juicy red berries is their representation of Strawberry Day, which marks the arrival in California of the Holy Names order's first sisters from Canada 130 years ago. While resting in San Francisco and celebrating their safe passage, they were served fresh California strawberries and cream by the Sisters of Mercy and were quite impressed. Throughout the years, sisters have handed down this tale until it became known within the convent community as the "Strawberry Story."

Tickets are $17.50 per person and must be purchased by May 17. No tickets are sold at the door. For information, call 395-2868.
