Best of SCVAL at Los Gatos for track finals

    By Dick Sparrer

All year long, the Los Gatos girls have dominated the 800 meters. And they'll try again this week when the best of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League converges on the Gatos track for the annual running of the league finals.

Sophomore Heather Hennessy, senior Amy LaPine and freshman Michelle Bertizhoff have consistently run strong in the two-lapper, sweeping in invitationals early in the season.

The talented trio will rival Maureen Marquess of St. Francis and Katie Brizgys of Palo Alto in the race for league gold when the Wildcats host the league trials on May 4 and the finals on May 6 at 3 p.m.

Sara McAleer (distance events) and Annie Farnady (shot put, discus) are other Los Gatos girls expected to star at the league meet, along with senior sensation Zack Regner (distance events) in the boys division. Emily King (long jump), Aly Chavez (400 meters), Racine Lewin (hurdles), Russ Martin (distance events), Jeff Hoeft (800), Seung Lee (hurdles), Nick Skrabe (weights), Eric Medeffesor (high jump), Matt Bates (800) and Brian Edwards (sprints) are talented young Wildcats who should be top prospects for medals at the finals.

    Rockwell wins

Brandon Rockwell won in straight sets to get off to a good start in the tennis finals in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL. Rockwell posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over a Cupertino opponent in the league quarterfinals to earn a spot in the semi-final round.

Chris Choi and Marc Matulich opened the tourney with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 victory over a Fremont pair in league doubles play. The Gatos duo will also move on to the semi's.

    Softball team falls

The Los Gatos girls softball team slipped to 3-4 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL and to 5-13 for the year after suffering a 3-0 loss to unbeaten St. Francis last week. The Wildcats were held hitless in the game.

    Cats ace Trojans

Marcia Wallis and Chris McMorrow finished with matching 40s to lead the Los Gatos golf team to a 207-222 victory over Milpitas on the par-36 front nine at the Summit Point Golf Course.

Trevor Branon and Eric Hansen each shot a 42 for the Wildcats, and Bobby James finished with a 43. The win helped the Cats improve to 8-3 in the El Camino Division.

    Volleyball wins

The Los Gatos boys volleyball went five games to beat Leland then swept Leigh in three to improve to 11-1 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

    The Wildcats battled from behind for a hard-earned 6-15, 15-10, 5-15, 15-3, 17-15 win over the Chargers, then whipped Leigh 15-1, 15-9, 15-3.

The Cats, 16-3 for the year, will wrap up the regular season on the road this week, visiting Valley Christian on May 4 at 6:30 p.m. and Del Mar on May 6 at 7 p.m.
