Winterguard places eighth in the national competition

While the rest of their classmates were taking it easy during spring break, 11 Los Gatos High School students were hard at work representing their school in the Winterguard International World Championships in Dayton, Ohio, April 13 to 17.

And the judges were impressed with the girls' performance--ranking them eighth in the world out of 114 teams.

Captain Erin Christofferson said it was an "amazing" moment when their team name was called to the floor for the award ceremony--a moment she'll never forget.

The team qualified for the world championships after taking first place at the WGI Western Regional which featured teams from all over the United States. Christofferson said the team has had a spectacular season with three second-place wins and six first-place wins during their local competition season.

Winterguard members hosted their own competition in February sponsored by the LGHS Band Boosters, which gave each member a $500 scholarship to use toward the $1,200 per person trip cost.

Winterguard is operated by the band department and is a form of dance combining artistry and athletic ability set to music. The team uses large flags, rifles and sabers in the dance, with members moving in unison to create a memorable visual effect.

Christofferson, a senior who has been with the team since it began four years ago, said their routine at the championships and throughout their competition season was set to Piano Concerto #1 by Keith Emerson. As a whole, the team is judged on techniques including movement, general effect and use of equipment.

One of the 10 judges at the world championships ranked LGHS fourth in movement, telling the group that these skills were well above those expected for their classification, Christofferson said.
