Los Gatos Weekly-TimesScott, Guedenet homer to lead Padres to a winBy Dick Sparrer The Padres had just one win this season when they went up against the Giants in the major division of the Los Gatos Little League last week. But they must have really wanted two. Because the Pads put together an impressive six-run rally in the sixth inning to pull out a thrilling 10-5 win over the Giants, pushing their season record to 2-7 in the major division. The Padres were down 5-4 heading into the sixth and final inning against the Giants last Friday evening. But they rallied for the six runs, then held the Giants scoreless in the home half of the frame to claim the victory. Devin Scott, Nick Guedenet, Bryan Ceglio and Jared Murphy had two hits each in the win. Scott and Guedenet each blasted solo homers in the third inning and Ceglio cracked a double. Jeremy was three-for-three with a homer and a double for the Giants in the loss. Alex Zanotto and Andrew Milman also doubled. In other action, the Pirates won two tight decisions last week to remain unbeaten in the 1998 season. The Bucs edged the Cubs 5-3 to open the week, then beat the Cubs 4-1 on Saturday. J.P. Grist and Cory Graham teamed to toss the Pirates to each of the wins. Grist struck out seven in the first three innings and Graham fanned three in the final three to lead the Pirates to the 5-3 win over the Cubs on Monday. Grist rapped a solo homer in the first for the Bucs and Graham singled and tripled. Logan Schafer slapped a two-run double in the second and Charlie Self singled and doubled in the win. Danny Politi tossed three strong innings for the Cubs in the game. Kenny Rodrigues doubled. Self ripped a run-scoring double to key a three-run rally in the sixth to lead the Pirates to the 4-1 win over the Cubs on Saturday. Graham tossed three scoreless innings to open the game, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Grist tossed the final three. Politi fanned the first eight batters he faced for the Cubs and he also singled and tripled in the game. Sean Fetke added two hits. The Expos won three games last week to move into second place in the division. The Expos beat the A's 8-5 on Sunday, then edged the Indians twice 6-5 and 3-2. Rishi Satia and Matt Martini tossed three innings apiece in the 8-5 win over the A's. Martini struck out five and allowed just one hit in three shutout innings. The Expos rallied for five runs in the fifth to pull out the victory. Singles by Martini and Jack Wall started things, and a two-run single by Mark Helleboid and a run-scoring double by Jeff Delva capped the rally. Delva also tripled in the game for the Expos. Greg Trobbe's run-scoring single in the first helped the A's open up a 5-0 lead in the game. Danny Sullivan, a 10-year-old hurler, tossed the first three innings for the A's and allowed no earned runs. Satia and Martini got together to toss the Expos to the 6-5 win over the Indians. Martini again tossed three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Satia had two hits for the Expos and Delva had a two-run single in the first inning. Wall added a run-scoring single in the third. David Holtzman tripled to knock home Nat Henry, aboard on a single, in the first inning, and he scored on a single by B.J. Lawler. Greg Bridges also singled home a run. Holtzman had two hits and two walks in the game and Henry had three hits, including a double. The Marlins beat the Rangers twice, 6-5 and 2-1. Russell Laubach went the distance to toss a four-hitter in the 2-1 Marlins win. Laubach fanned three. Mike Brienso scored what proved to be the winning run for the Marlins. He doubled in the third and scored when Laubach reached on an error. Brienso had scored a run in the first when he reached on an error and eventually romped home on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Burke. Casey Pfeifer and Eric Rude each tossed three strong innings for the Rangers in the loss. Brienso and Laubach teamed up to lift the Marlins to the 6-5 win earlier in the week. Brienso singled in the sixth, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Laubach to make it 6-5. Brienso had a double and two singles in the win and Burke tossed four innings to get the pitching win. Chad Corl ripped a triple. Tommy Towson singled and tripled for the Rangers and Josh Miceli and Nick Sgarlatta had two hits apiece.
