Los Gatos Weekly-TimesNews BriefsThe post office wants your food Letter carriers will be picking up canned food on their delivery routes this Saturday, May 9, as part of the nationwide "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive. Residents are asked to fill a sturdy grocery bag with nonperishable food such as canned food, juice, pasta, cereal and rice, and leave the bags next to the mailbox before mail delivery on Saturday. Letter carriers will pick up the bags and deliver the food to local food banks. "It helps pick up the slack during the year, because people tend to give during the holidays. We like to help out in the middle of the year to keep the food bank stocked," said letter carrier Suzy Diaz, who is coordinating the effort in the area from the Dell Station. The food drive, which began in 1992, is the largest in the nation; last year 73 million pounds of food were collected. The drive is co-sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers Union and the Campbell Soup Company, which is kicking off the food drive by donating 10 million pounds of canned soup.
