      Big win for Gatos girls

      By Dick Sparrer

A week that didn't start out too great ended up quite nicely for the Los Gatos girls' softball team.

The Wildcats lost a tough 4-1 decision to Mountain View to open the week, but the Cats battled back to knock off Los Altos 6-3 in extra innings on Friday.

It was an exciting win for the Wildcats, who had to battle from behind midway through the game, then scored three times in the ninth to break the tie.

The Cats led 1-0 after an inning, but Los Altos scored two in the fourth to take the lead. Gatos scored twice in the fifth to lead 3-2, but the Eagles tied it with a run in the home half of the inning.

It remained 3-3 through regulation and into extra innings, but Gatos broke the tie for good with three runs in the ninth.

Gillain Wadis doubled and singled twice, and Tessa Donnelly had three hits to lead Gatos to the victory. Courtney Radonich ripped a couple of hits to help make pitcher Nancy Mills a winner.

The Wildcats, 5-4 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and 14-7 for the year, had opened the week losing the 4-1 nod to Mountain View. Chelsea Hayes had two of the four Gatos hits in the game.

The Spartans scored two in the second, one in the third and one more in the fifth to go up 4-0. Los Gatos could get just one back in the fifth to avoid the shutout.
