Los Gatos engineer wins competition
David Sears, a Los Gatos resident and engineer with Hewlett-Packard in Palo Alto, won an Excellence in Design award last month from Design News magazine. Sears developed an optical link used to facilitate high-speed digital data communications between computers.
Optical links work by converting electrical signals--from the sending computer--into a modulated laser beam that is carried along an optical fiber. At the receiving end, the process is reversed.
Although conventional optical links use $5.50 high-performance lenses, Sears developed his link using a precise 2.5 mm. diameter sapphire ball bearing for 50 cents. Additionally, the lasers used in his design are highly efficient and last about 100,000 hours, compared to the lasers used in most links, which last only about 1,000 hours.
