Susan Branch, of the Los Gatos Elementary Education Foundation, and Fred Hanson, executive vice president of Hitachi Data Systems, watch Van Meter students (from left) Robby Couchee, Ryan Fitzhenry, Naveed Ghaffarian and Erik Rollin work on a science experiment. Such projects get a big boost from the LGEEF, which recently went over the $1 million mark in its fundraising efforts. Established in 1982, the organization raises funds for the district's science, music and physical education programs, Triad [student] counseling, parent education, Art Docents, mini-grants for teachers and the after-school homework program at Fisher Middle School. The nonprofit organization is governed by a board of parent volunteers. Each year, Hitachi supports the fundraising Phone-a-thon by providing the facility, phones and dinner for parent volunteers. A big community thank-you is planned for June 1 on the lawn in front of Los Gatos High School.
