      Town hires an attorney

      By Clarence Cromwell

Los Gatos' new town attorney has all the right skills, and he even lives in the neighborhood--sort of. Orry Korb gained the council's approval on April 21 to take the $83,000-per-year job.

Korb's know-how was a major factor in the appointment. Councilmember Steve Blanton said he noted Korb's familiarity with land-use issues.

The town staff sifted out the best 10 applicants for the job, and then the council interviewed the top five applicants, Town Manager David Knapp said.

Knapp said he appreciated Korb's willingness to personally litigate cases for the city. He also noted that Korb is a skilled adviser in keeping cities from making mistakes that get them in legal trouble later.

"There's a good match between the kinds of things he's done and the needs we have," Knapp said.

Korb is currently city attorney for the city of Galt, near Sacramento. He's been a legal counsel to local governments since 1984 and has served Gilroy, San Jose, Los Angeles County and various private firms.

Korb graduated from Syracuse University College of Law in 1983.

The attorney said he chose Los Gatos because it has a reputation as a well-managed city and a beautiful location. It's also much closer to his Santa Cruz home than is his current job. To avoid the 2.5-hour commute to Galt, Korb keeps an apartment there in addition to his home in Santa Cruz.
