Black, Ellis toss the Red Sox to back-to-back Pony League wins

Indians beat the Sox on combined no-hitter

    By Dick Sparrer

It was a great time for pitchers in the Los Gatos Pony League last week.

Woody Wilkerson and Matt Cisowski teamed up to toss a no-hitter for the league-leading Indians, there were combined two-hitters in two other games, and Danny Sullivan and Adam Wells each tossed complete games.

But it was the Red Sox who got the most of their pitching efforts last week as Ryan Black and Matt Ellis saw action in back-to-back victories.

Black, Ellis and A.J. Comeau joined forces to toss a seven-hitter for the Red Sox in a tight 2-1 win over the Mets. Black went four innings to get the mound win, and Ellis came on late in relief to pick up the save.

Mets hurlers Forest Gallien, Steven Krach and Justin Schafer limited the Red Sox to just four hits in the game, but Sox hurlers scattered the seven hits for the Mets to pull out the win.

Schafer singled, doubled and tripled to lead the Mets at the plate. Colby Moore added two hits.

Black came back to toss 4 2/3 innings, but it was Ellis who came in relief, picking up the win for the Red Sox in a tight 6-5 victory over the Cubs last Saturday.

The Cubs had taken a 5-4 lead with a three-run rally in the top of the seventh, Andy Zweng scoring the go-ahead run for the Cubbies. But the Sox came battling back in the home half of the frame to pick up the win.

Nate Dreesman opened the bottom of the seventh with his second single of the day. He stole second, moved to third on an infield hit by Charlie Denues, and scored the tying run when Noah Henry bounced out to first.

Denues took third on a passed ball and eventually scored on an error to give the Red Sox the thrilling win.

Ellis helped his own cause with two hits in the game.

Wilkerson and Cisowski turned in the masterpiece of the week with their combined no-hitter in the Indians' 9-1 win over the Red Sox. Wilkerson went six innings to get the win, striking out 10 along the way, and Cisowski struck out two in an inning of relief.

Wilkerson singled, doubled and tripled for the Indians in the win, and Danny Frey singled and triple.

Wells recorded a gem when he went the distance to flip a two-hitter for the Giants in a 6-1 win over the White Sox. Wells struck out 13 in the game and helped himself at the plate with a couple of singles.

Jeremy Cleveland and Kyle Blair slapped two hits apiece in the win.

Gallien, Krach and Schafer combined for a two-hit shutout in a 5-0 win by the Mets over the Orioles on Saturday. Gallien went three innings to get the win, striking out six, and Krach fanned six in three innings of relief. Schafer struck out two in the seventh.

Schafer doubled and scored a run in the first inning for the Mets, and Alex Clark singled home a run later in the game.

Stephen Genetti and Dylan Burke got together to flip a two-hitter for the Orioles in an 8-1 win over the White Sox. Genetti was the winning pitcher and had two hits for the O's, and David Pavicich singled and tripled.

Sullivan went the distance to pick up the win for the Cardinals in a 4-2 victory over the Giants. Sullivan doubled and tripled for the Cards, and Kyle Jury had two hits.

Cleveland had two hits for the Giants.

Michael Galt went 5 1/3 innings to get the win, and Justin Gladfelter came on to pick up the save for the Braves in a 5-2 win over the Cardinals. Will Kapp singled and doubled in the win. Kevin Arroyo and Steven Rodas each doubled for the Cards.

Los Gatos Pony League standings (as of May 4): Indians 7-1, Braves 4-3, Orioles 4-3, Cardinals 4-4, Giants 3-4, Red Sox 3-5, White Sox 2-4, Cubs 2-5.
