The Prowler
There are several special events this week. One of them is the birthday of the Prowler's own mama cat! Although most readers don't know this cat's mother, hopefully everyone knows this coming Sunday is Mother's Day. Take it from this procrastinator--don't wait until the last minute to buy a nice gift, or they will all be picked over!
This is also National Pet Week, according to a press release the Prowler got from Guide Dogs for the Blind. Despite its name, the nonprofit organization is not promoting itself this week, but rather wants to get the word out about responsible dog ownership. According to statistics they've gleaned from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 5 million Americans get bitten by dogs every year.
This cat finds that unacceptable. Fortunately, there are many things owners can do. Here are some helpful hints: socialize puppies to make them people- and animal-friendly; neuter male dogs to reduce their aggressiveness; enroll dogs in obedience classes; and keep dogs on leashes in all public places.
Jumping off that soapbox, the Prowler now wants to promote something else: National Nurses Week. Often eclipsed by doctors and surgeons, nurses are certainly nothing to sneeze at-health pun intended! In fact, nurses deal as much with patients as doctors do, just in different ways.
Community Hospital of Los Gatos is honoring its nurses with a weeklong "It Had to Be You" theme, named after the Frank Sinatra song. The hospital is singing the praises of its nurses with a special luncheon, entertainment and a commemorative compact disc. So next time you see a nurse, thank him or her!
