Los Gatos netters advance in CCS tennis tournament

    By Dick Sparrer

Los Gatos didn't win the tennis title in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this spring.

But the Wildcats still have a shot at the Central Coast Section (CCS) crown.

The Cats finished second to Monta Vista in the De Anza Division, but they opened the CCS Division I tournament with a tight 4-3 win over Gunn last week.

The victory pushes Los Gatos into the CCS semifinals this week against #2 seed Bellarmine. The teams were to meet Tuesday at Santa Clara University, with the winner advancing to the CCS championship match on May 9, 2 p.m., at Courtside against the Monta Vista-Leland winner.

Los Gatos took a 12-11 season record into Tuesday's match with the Bells, who boast a 14-7 mark after opening CCS with a 6-1 win over Homestead.

Los Gatos is coming off a solid showing at the league tournament. Will McAlister and Brian Brogan combined to finish second in the league doubles event.

McAlister and Brogan opened the tourney with a 6-2, 6-3 win over a pair from Monta Vista, then beat Ashvin Soin and Garrett Wyatt of Saratoga 6-2, 7-5 in the semifinals.

The Gatos pair ended up losing a heartbreaker 7-6 (12), 7-6 (4) in a pair of tiebreakers to Bastian Bartels and Robert Yee of Monta Vista.

Senior Thomas Helleboid won his opener 6-1, 6-1 over a Gunn foe in the first round of the singles tourney, but he lost 6-0, 6-0 to a Los Altos player in the quarterfinals.

Victor Larssen lost in the first round of the singles tourney, and Lee Gerston and David Reagan lost in the first round of doubles play.
