Cats finish league unbeaten, ready for volleyball playoffs
By Dick Sparrer
There was little on the line when the Los Gatos boys volleyball team wrapped up the regular season at Fremont in Sunnyvale last week.
The Wildcats already had a lock on the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) championship and had secured a place in the Central Coast Section (CCS) playoffs.
But the Cats were playing for something when they battled the Firebirds--they wanted a perfect league record.
And that's just what they got when they rolled over the Firebirds in three straight games to finish SCVAL play with a 12-0 record.
Los Gatos whipped Fremont 15-10, 15-10, 15-13 to complete the perfect season. The Wildcats are 33-6 overall this year.
Max Haueter drilled a team-high 31 kills to lead the Cats to the win over the Firebirds. Fletcher Anderson and Shaun Sullivan finished with 17 kills apiece, Trevor Christiansen had 15, Mason McGown added 10 and Neil Perry had nine.
"It was a perfect end to a great season!" said Los Gatos head coach Tom Jack after the win. "The boys are peaking towards the end of the season and are ready for CCS championships."
"Their sweat and sacrifice has brought success," he added.
The league championship clinched an automatic CCS playoff berth for the Wildcats. Gatos will host Monterey (20-10), champs of the Monterey Bay League, in the CCS opener on May 9, 7 p.m. The winner moves on the quarter-final round on May 11, 5 p.m. or 7 p.m., at Santa Clara High School.
