Stacey Baumgardner of San Jose saw her untitled oil painting named Best of Show; Mabel Tang of Los Gatos took first prize in the mixed-media category for her photograph, "Exhausted", and Andree Parker of Los Gatos, placed first in three-dimensional sculpture for her bas-relief "Clown," in the 1996 Los Gatos Art Association's Open Juried Show.
A total of 236 works of art were entered for the annual show, of which 129 were accepted for display at the Los Gatos Museum. Los Gatan David Middlebrook, chairman of fine art at San Jose State University, juried the show, which opened to the public May 2.
Cash awards of $100 for first place in each of four categories, $50 for second and $25 for third were presented at an artists' reception May 4 at the Los Gatos Museum, W. Main St. at Tait Avenue, where the works will be shown till June 1.
In the watercolors and pastels category, George Ford of Fremont won first place for his painting "Call to Justice." Baumgardner's "Lilium" won first among oils and acrylics.
Other local winners in each category were:
Oils and acrylics: Judy Anton of Campbell, for an acrylic painting titled "Brooke: Overcoming Monday's Monkey," second prize; Amy Finger of Cupertino, for "Las Palmas Park," third place. Honorable mention went to Elizabeth Parashis of Campbell for "I'm Being Female."
Watercolors and pastels: William Cunningham, Monte Sereno, "Hi-tech '90s," second; Ruth Morrow, San Jose, "Pacific Gemstones," third; honorable mention, Jeanne Kolb, San Jose, "Out of Africa."
Sculpture: Eugene Impey, Los Gatos, for "L. A. Bull," second; Janet Bajorek, Los Gatos, ceramic, "Tango," third. Honorable mentions: Manou Saratpoure, Mountain View, "Sincere," and K. Froukje Schipper, San Jose, "Together."
Mixed media, including graphics and photography: Man-Li Chao, Cupertino, "Untitled," second; Peggy Crowder, San Jose, computer art, "The Headache," third. Honorable mentions: Sharon Yang, San Jose, "Muse," and Ruth Geredes, Los Gatos, "Untitled."
Middlebrook said, "Art should stretch its boundaries, but not so far as to lose its relation to the present in the community." A Los Gatos resident, he has Artworks in Stone here.
The Los Gatos Museum gallery is open daily except Mondays and Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m. There is no admission charge.
