Herbert Stang
Herbert Stang of Los Gatos died March 19 at Good Samaritan Hospital following a long illness. He was 93.
Born Dec. 9, 1903 in San Francisco, Stang enjoyed riding horses as a youth and made saddles and bridles throughout much of his life. He worked for many years at San Francisco's Lucky Lager Brewing Company. Stang also served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the early 1940s.
Stang settled in Los Gatos about 27 years ago, where he became known for the walks he took through downtown every day.
Survivors include son Herbert Stang of Los Gatos; granddaughters Sandra Stang of Carmel, Sheila Stang of Tucson, Ariz. and Susan Baker of Vacaville; and great-grandchildren Cherry and Cody Cook of Tucson and Stacey and Matthew Baker of Vacaville.
Memorial services have been held, with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma.
Genevieve Gaffney
Longtime Los Gatos resident Genevieve Gaffney died April 28 at the age of 86.
The second of four children, Genevieve Thelma Aurora Pare was born Sept. 4, 1909 in the family home in Walpole, Mass. A graduate of Walpole High School, Gaffney married her husband, William Gaffney, in 1936 and had two children, Joanne and Paul. The family moved to Los Gatos in 1953.
In addition to managing a household and family, Gaffney worked at the Bank of America in Los Gatos and for the Culligan water conditioning company before her 1970 retirement. She also volunteered for several years at the Happy Dragon Thrift Shop.
Gaffney was preceded in death by her husband and daughter. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Paul and Fredrica Gaffney of Los Gatos; granddaughter Danielle Wall of Grandbury, Texas and grandchildren Dax, Erin, Nicholas and Jonathan, all of Los Gatos; two great-grandchildren; sister Helen Hansen of Massachusetts and brothers Albert and Henry Pare, also of Massachusetts.
Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to Break the Cycle, a nonprofit organization for victims of child abuse, in care of Rev. Cathy Foote, 1879 Ellen Ave., San Jose, 95124.
Florence Ring
Florence Down Ring died April 29 at The Terraces of Los Gatos. She was 86.
Born May 20, 1909 in Odebolt, Iowa, she attended Morningside College in Sioux City and received her nursing degree from Evanston Hospital in Illinois. She began a private nursing career and then worked for Commonwealth Edison in the Chicago area.
Ring served in the 12th Army Division in Africa during World War II and in England during the Korean War. Married to Conrad Ring in 1970, she settled in
Los Gatos in 1973, where she became active in the First United Methodist Church, the Community Hospital of Los Gatos Auxiliary and the Newcomers and Elks clubs.
She is survived by daughter June Steiner-Lyon of Los Gatos; son Ron Ring of Altamonte Springs, Fla.; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and sister Helen Carson of Moline, Ill.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date, with arrangements by the Neptune Society. Donations may be made to the Memorial Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Los Gatos, 19 High School Ct., Los Gatos, 95030.
