Daves Avenue Elementary School holds its annual community carnival on May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the school grounds, 17770 Daves Ave. The family-themed event features game booths, a petting zoo, cake walk, dunk tank, clowns, a fire-eater, a lip-sync contest and a donation drawing.
More than 1,000 outstanding high school seniors have received Merit Scholarship awards sponsored by corporations, company foundations and other organizations, as part of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation competition. Recipients were chosen from among National Merit Finalists with qualifications of interest to the companies offering awards. Alison D. Hendrix of Los Gatos High School received an award from Amdahl Corporation. She is the daughter of an Amdahl employee.
Brett Lockyer, a freshman at Leigh High School, won first-place honors in his division in the Santa Clara County Science and Engineering Fair, held March 26-27 at the San Jose Convention Center. His project, titled "The Acoustical Properties of Selected Materials," earned him a recognition plaque, $50 from the American Society of Heating and Refrigeration, $50 from Varian Associates Inc., a $100 Savings Bond from the California Association of Professional Scientists and a graphing calculator and certificate from the U.S. Navy.
