Souther third

Los Gatos senior Hamilton Souther fired a low 162 to finish third overall at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League golf finals last week. The top five individual finishers advance to the Central Coast Section tournament.

Sophomore Matt Cuevas of Los Gatos finished sixth overall at 167.

Golfers played one round at Palo Alto Municipal Golf Course and a second round at Shoreline in Mountain View.

Vikings edge Jags

Jennifer Mallon and Jaime Simon locked up in an eight-inning thriller, but it was Mallon coming out on top when the West Valley Community College women's softball team edged San Jose City College 32-2 in the first round of the playoffs in the South Division of the Coast Conference.

The Vikings broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the eighth, then Mallon blanked the Jaguars in the home half of the inning to nail down the win. She's now 39-9 for the year. Autumn Kanemoto, Janna Marquez and Chantie McDonnell ripped two hits each to lead West Valley to the victory.

Vikings split

A split in the final week of the regular season helped the West Valley Community College baseball team finish over .500 in conference play, but a 15-13 record was good for just fifth in the rugged South Division of the Coast Conference.

The Vikings beat up on last-place Hartnell 24-2, but dropped a tough 5-2 nod to co-champion Mission College later in the week. Matt Troedson was tagged with the loss against the Saints and J.R. Ziegelmann had two hits.
