Los Gatos girls win hoop title at the NJB nationals
All-Stars go to Disneyland following big victory
By Dick Sparrer
The National Basketball Association may be still in the process of deciding its champion for the 2000 season.
But titles have already been decided in the National Junior Basketball League, and Los Gatos has clinched one of them.
An all-star team representing the Los Gatos NJB won the Division II title for fifth and sixth grade girls at the NJB nationals held in Los Angeles in April.
Los Gatos rallied from behind in the second half to pull out a thrilling 31-27 win over Irvine to win the title at the nationals. Gatos trailed at intermission in the topsy-turvy game that saw the lead change hands several times, but the girls pulled out the win in the end.
It was the fourth straight win in the tournament for Los Gatos, which had beaten Las Vegas 36-26 in the semifinals.
Members of the championship team included Christine Allen, Kristen Garfield, Maria Talpas, Monica Thomas, Caroline Murphy, Rachel Moeller, Madeline Rose, Jolyn Robards, Casey Duncheon, Jessica Watts and Elizabeth Rose. Coaches of the squad were Bill Garfield and Jim Murphy.
The girls, who celebrated their championship performance with a visit to Disneyland, had qualified for the nationals through sectional tournament play.
