    Alliance will meet May 18

The Neighborhood Alliance, a group of Los Gatos and Monte Sereno neighborhood activists, meets May 18, at 7 p.m. at A Place For Teens behind Los Gatos High School.

    Call 408.491.9393.

Water rates likely to increase soon

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is proposing an 8.8 percent increase in wholesale water rates, beginning in July. The rate increase could result in higher rates from Los Gatos' primary water supplier, the San Jose Water Company.

A SJWC spokesperson said the district's rate increase translates to a 3 percent cost increase for the company, though it has not decided whether or not it will pass the cost on to consumers.

SJWC has submitted its own request for a 12.5 percent consumer rate increase to the California Public Utilities Commission.

    Montessori decision finalized

Despite the last-ditch efforts of a group of neighbors to block the project, the Town Council approved a resolution overturning a Planning Commission decision and allowing Mariposa Montessori to open a new preschool at Faith Lutheran Church on Ferris Avenue.

Motivated by traffic concerns, the majority of neighboring residents opposed the project from the outset. The council, buoyed by a traffic-calming plan for the area, approved the school on April 3, by a 3-2 vote. However, the approval was challenged by neighbors at the April 17 meeting, and the item was continued to May 1, after the four-member council deadlocked 2-2.

The school hopes to open by fall. The majority of traffic-calming measures will be installed in the next several weeks.
