    The Prowler

Whoever came up with the moniker "The Merry Month of May" had it right! Not only is this month full of special observances such as May Day, Nurse's Day, Mother's Day and Memorial Day, it's also loaded with fun events--especially in Los Gatos!

For starters, Union Middle School's drama club presents the George Gershwin musical My One and Only May 1316 at 2130 Los GatosAlmaden Road. This adaptation of the Broadway hit centers around a 1920s aviator and a woman who swims the English Channel. "'S'Wonderful" and "Strike Up the Band" are a few of its familiar numbers. Call 266-1268 for show times and ticket info.

Next comes Theatre in the Mountains and Gypsy, a musical that tells the story of an ambitious stage mother who pushes her daughters to become vaudeville stars in the 1920s and '30s. One grows up to become the famous Gypsy Rose Lee. Performances are May 1523 at 23800 Summit Road. For all the particulars, call 353-9999.

A predominantly outdoor cat, the Prowler was excited to hear that May is State Parks Month, which means admission to nearly all of California's 265 state parks is free. All that's necessary is to pick up a free day-use coupon at local libraries. The closest parks are Castle Rock in Saratoga, Henry Cowell Redwoods and the Forest of Nisene Marks, the latter two in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Afternoon tea is served--just for senior citizens--on May 16 at A Place for Teens, located behind Los Gatos High School. All seniors are welcome to stop by "The Outhouse" at 3 p.m. and enjoy free tea and light snacks, served by the teens themselves, chat and play games. Please RSVP by calling 236-5648.
