A Song as Lovely as a Tree

Los Gatos marked Arbor Day April 30 with tree-planting ceremonies at Alta Vista, Blossom Hill, Van Meter and Daves Avenue schools. Here, first-graders at Blossom Hill spread their limbs as they sing "I Am a Tree." In conjunction with Arbor Day, the National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, named Los Gatos a Tree City USA. On April 20, Dave Watell with the California Department of Forestry presented the Tree City USA award to the mayor of Los Gatos in the Town Council Chambers. To be eligible for this recognition, a community must observe Arbor Day and must have and enforce a tree-protection ordinance and have a tree board or department and a comprehensive community forest program.
