Cats win league volleyball title, now head to playoffs

By Dick Sparrer

The Los Gatos boys' volleyball team wrapped up one championship last week--and now the Wildcats are going for another.

The Cats easily whipped Oak Grove and Valley Christian to complete a 14-0 season in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, and they'll try to carry the momentum of that perfect league showing into the Central Coast Section playoffs.

Los Gatos enters the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in CCS. The Cats are 33-1 for the year, and host Valley Christian of Dublin (18-3) in a first round match on May 14, 7 p.m., in the Gatos gym.

Bellarmine boasts a 21-0 season record and is the No. 2 seed in the tourney. The Bells are home against San Lorenzo Valley (13-14) in first-round action on Thursday.

In other first-round matches No. 9 Del Mar (11-9) visits No. 8 Harbor (18-7), No. 5 Fremont (21-8) heads to No. 12 Redwood Christian (14-6), No. 13 Valley Christian of San Jose (18-14) travels to No. 4 Monterey (32-3), No. 6 Gilroy (21-5) is on the road to face No. 11 Saratoga (17-4), No. 10 Mt. Madonna (9-4) goes to No. 7 Serra (19-10), and No. 14 Hollister (23-10) heads to No. 3 Homestead (26-7).

Los Gatos clinched a perfect league season with quick three-game wins over Oak Grove and Valley Christian last week.

The Cats made quick work of the Eagles 15-6, 15-7, 15-5, then did the same against the Warriors, winning 15-8, 15-2, 15-2.

Members of the championship Los Gatos squad include Justin Albano, Adrian Baer, Marco Baer, Pete Beritzhoff, Brett Bertocci, Greg Blevins, Keith Busam, Jason Cardoso, Devan Denton, Josh Garnier, Alex Hain, Andrew Holcomb, Kevin Krug, Derrick Pang, Parnell Pang, Stephen Pulley, Ed Riolino, Grant Schlink, Devin Sodt, Brian Starr, Adam Stephenson, Nate Sweeters and Mike Walleen.

The team is coached by Tom Jack and his assistant, Peter Baer.
