The Santa Clara County Fair exhibits office seeks people interested in displaying their talents with art, foods, plants and animals in the Fair's 10 exhibit divisions. The 1997 Fair, whose theme is "Country Fresh Family Fun," runs July 24 through Aug. 3.
The California Living department focuses on clothing and textiles, porcelain art and food preparation and preservation. Backyard chefs can use their secret sauces in the annual barbecue contest.
The Fine Arts department offers categories in calligraphy, cartooning, ceramics, graphics and multimedia, painting, watercolor and photography.
In the Industrial Technology department, students from junior high school through college can show projects involving architecture, drafting, technical illustration, electronics, manufacturing, computer-assisted machines, wood and plastics.
The Children's Gardens section of the Floriculture department has added three new categories: children's fancy plants, fancy containers and fancy footwear. Other floricultural opportunities include flower arranging, cut flowers, window box displays, garden displays and children's scenic dish gardens.
The Agriculture/Horticulture department is recruiting entries for its one- family farm and community garden categories. Its other categories include homegrown fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, dried beans and seeds, honey and baled hay. There will also be a scarecrow contest.
In the junior division, youths 19 and younger can participate in many livestock categories and may auction off their own animals. Most youth exhibitors belong to Future Farmers of America or 4-H Clubs. Junior exhibits include sections on honey, baking, arts and crafts, clothing, leather craft, woodworking, photography and computers.
The Pacific Junior Classic seeks junior exhibitors of beef cattle and sheep. The Open Livestock department features senior exhibitors showing off the cattle, sheep, hogs and goats they have bred. Owners of chickens, turkeys, geese, pigeons and rabbits can participate in the Poultry, Pigeon and Rabbit department.
Each division has its own deadlines and specifications. Complete entry-information books can be obtained at the Los Gatos Public Library or at the exhibits office at 344 Tully Road in San Jose. For more information, call 494-3134.
