Skills for Life class free this summer

Community Against Substance Abuse is for its second year sponsoring the Skills for Life Peer Education Program. This is a free summer school course that gives high school students training in how to educate fifth-graders about substance use/abuse and other health-related issues. The program, which begins June 23, spans four hours per day for three weeks.

LGHS English teacher and Friday Night Live adviser Kurt Kroesche will facilitate the program. Through professional instruction and guest speakers, teens will learn about interpersonal communication, leadership, public speaking, stress management, decision-making, peer pressure and relationships. They will study the characteristics and dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and work together to develop presentations for later use with their fifth-grade audiences.

Participants earn five units of practical arts credit for completing the program and can earn community service hours as well. Registrations are now being accepted through the Los Gatos-Saratoga Department of Community Education and Recreation, located at 123 E. Main St. Call Kathy Tumason at 354-4555 or the recreation department at 354-8700 for more information.

Lexington school holds flea market fundraiser

Just in time for the end of spring cleaning but before the start of summer vacation, Lexington School is hosting a flea market May 31 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Van Meter School, located at 16445 Los Gatos Blvd. Individuals interested in selling items can rent spaces for $15 each. Spaces may also be available on the day of the sale; sellers should arrive for setup by 7 a.m.

Donations--including new or good-quality used toys, books and clothing--are also being accepted for Lexington's own sale booth. All flea market proceeds benefit the Lexington Home and School Club. Beverages and snacks will be available for sale. For more information or to reserve a space, call Kathy Wingo at 353-5028.
