It will be quiet on the athletic fields at Los Gatos High School this week, but it will be a busy week for the Wildcats.

The Cats are heavily involved in Central Coast Section (CCS) playoff activity in venues throughout the CCS area.

The Los Gatos baseball team will open the CCS Division II playoffs on the road this week. The Cats, 14-12 for the year after a split last week, will head to Palo Alto (21-5) for a May 16, 4 p.m., first-round game. The winner advances to the quarter-final round on May 18 at Washington Park in Santa Clara against the San Lorenzo Valley (15-13)-North Monterey County (23-7) first-round winner.

The Gatos girls softball team heads to the Salinas Sports Complex on May 15, 7 p.m. The Wildcats, 20-10 for the season, will open against Soquel (13-8). The winner moves on to the quarterfinals on May 18, 10 a.m., against Notre Dame Belmont (20-4) at Hawes Field in Redwood City.

The Los Gatos girls and boys track and field teams will enter the CCS trials on May 18 at San José City College (SJCC), with the top finishers qualifying for the CCS finals set for May 24 on the same SJCC oval.

The LG swimmers will be in the pool for the CCS trials and finals May 17 and 18 at the Santa Clara International Swim Center.

And the Gatos boys volleyball team was to take its 35-6 season record up against Mount Madonna (30-4) in a 6 p.m. semi final match on May 14. The winner will face the Soquel (22-5)-Serra (24-6) winner in the CCS finals on May 16, 7 p.m., at Santa Clara.

    Cats beat Fremont

Los Gatos is coming off a thrilling 2-1 win over Fremont as the baseball team heads into postseason play.

It was a two-run homer in the fourth by Travis Howell that lifted the Wildcats to the win over the Firebirds.

Alex Rollin went the distance to toss a three-hitter for the mound victory. Rollin is now 8-3 for the year.

Rollin found himself behind 1-0 after Fremont scored in the third, but Howell ripped the two-run blast in the fourth, and that's all the big right-hander needed.

Jayson Furia had two hits in the win for the Cats, and Steve Sweeney ripped a double.

Earlier in the week, Gatos had dropped a 5-1 nod to Milpitas. Anderson doubled in the loss for the Cats.

    Softball split

The Los Gatos girls softball team finished the regular season with two games at home and ended up with a split.

The Wildcats knocked off Monta Vista 5-2, but finished up with a 4-1 loss to St. Francis.

The loss to the Lancers ended an impressive run for the Cats, which saw Gatos win five straight games. Sophomore hurler Melissa Mullins was tagged the tough loss, and Kim Pugh ripped a double.

Gatos had opened the week with the 5-2 win over the Matadors. Mullins flipped a four-hitter for the win, and Virginia Fritsch singled and tripled to drive in two runs.

A week earlier, Mullins blanked Mountain View on one hit as the Cats rolled to a 3-0 win. Fritsch had three hits for Los Gatos.

Fritsch doubled and Mullins fired a four-hitter in a 2-1 win over Milpitas, and Mullins tossed a no-hitter, striking out nine, in a 2-0 win over Monta Vista. Pugh doubled and tripled and Camille Cardinale doubled in the win.

A game earlier, Mullins whirled a one-hit shutout and Fritsch singled and tripled in a 3-0 win over Los Altos. Augustine added a double.
