Three twos add up to wins for Little League's Cubs

    By Dick Sparrer

Two plus two plus two adds up to six.

At least, that's the conventional answer. For the Cubs in the major division of the Los Gatos Little League, it usually adds up to victory.

It did last Saturday when Paul Politi, K.C. Silva and Andrew Gomez tossed two innings each to lead the Cubs to a 10-2 win over the Indians.

Politi went the first two frames, allowing a run, and Silva tossed the next two, giving up a run and striking out four. Gomez finished up with two scoreless innings of relief, fanning two.

Matt Berg had three hits and scored two runs in the win, and Caleb Larsen singled and doubled. Politi also doubled.

Marc Tonkel had two hits and Nathan Burke singled and scored twice for the Indians.

Gomez had tossed two no-hit, no-run innings to lead the Cubs to a 14-0 win over the Indians earlier in the week. He fanned five in the game.

Gomez was also 3-for-3 and drove in three runs to lead the club at the plate. Politi ripped a couple of two-run doubles in the win.

Karl Winkleman had two hits in the game for the Indians.

In other action, Coby Dombrowsky struck out two in two innings of relief to pick up the win for the Cardinals in a 9-8 win over the A's.

Jackson Dallas was 3-for-3 with a solo homer in the fourth and Darren Churchill was 3-for-3 for the Cards.

Nick Kalpin was the winning pitcher and Churchill tossed two innings of perfect relief to lead the A's to a 16-2 win over the Cards on Saturday. Dan Ouellet singled and doubled and Dallas and Drew Martig each doubled in the win.

The Giants and Tigers split a pair of decisions. The Giants opened the week with an 11-5 win over the Tigers, and the Tigers came back with a 4-1 win over the Giants on Saturday.

Blake Morrison went the distance to toss a four-hitter in the Tigers' 4-1 win. Morrison, who struck out 14 and walked just two, also led the offense with a single and a two-run homer; in the third. Andrew Saso had walked and scored ahead of Morrison on the homer, then Geo Shannon doubled and scored on a couple of passed balls.

Kiko Alonso singled and doubled and Tim Trobbe ripped a run-scoring double in the game.

Robbie Comeau gave up a hit and struck out four in three innings to get the win for the Giants in the 11-5 victory over the Tigers earlier in the week. Alonso tripled and singled twice to knock in three runs, Comeau singled and doubled, Matt Horton had two hits and Hank Hansen ripped a two-run homer in the second.

Garrett Blackwell gave up just one hit and struck out four in three innings to get the pitching win for the Red Sox in a 9-0 victory over the Yankees.

Blackwell and Colin Chapman each singled and doubled in the win. Tim Garvey ripped a triple and Chris Walker doubled.

A first-inning single by Alex Silva was the only hit for the Yanks.

Earlier in the week, the Yankees had rallied in the bottom of the fifth to pull out a 10-8 win over the Red Sox. Kevin Connelly had two hits and scored twice in the win, and Silva scored twice.

Chapman singled and tripled for the Sox, and Mikey Denevi and Brett Forrester each doubled.

The Yanks opened the week with a 9-5 win over the Braves. Nathan Aguiar struck out six and allowed just two hits in three shutout innings. Michael Scales and Andrew Scales had two hits apiece in the win.

Nick Elias and Michael Shawhan each singled and doubled for the Braves.

The Braves came back with two wins over the Reds later in the week, winning 3-1 on Tuesday and 10-4 on Saturday.

The Braves scored 10 runs on seven hits in the fifth to rally from behind for the 10-4 win last weekend. Nick Hirschman gave up a hit and fanned three in three innings of scoreless relief to get the pitching win.

A two-run single by Kyle Johnson, a two-run double by Hirschman and a run-scoring triple by Shawhan keyed the big rally in the fifth.

Steven Zavodnick singled and tripled for the Braves.

Cole Meleyco and Todd Ericson tossed two innings each of shutout baseball for the Reds. Dan Agirmonti drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the fourth.

Zavodnick was the winning pitcher with three perfect innings in the Braves' 3-1 win over the Reds. Zavodnick struck out seven in three frames. Hirschman also tossed three strong innings in the win.

It was a two-run single in the third by Elias that was the key hit of the game.

Travis Bonner doubled for the Reds and Meleyco singled home a run in the fourth.

Los Gatos Little League major division standings (as of May 11)-- Cubs 12-1, Braves 10-4, Red Sox 10-4, Tigers 9-5, A's 8-5, Giants 8-6, Cards 4-10, Yankees 4-10, Indians 3-11, Reds 1-13.
