Mullins, Foley win for Cubs
By Dick Sparrer
The Cubs didn't use many pitchers in their two Los Gatos Pony Baseball games last week ... they didn't have to.
Marty Mullins and Bricklin Foley put together back-to-back complete games to lead the Cubs to a couple of wins in Pony action.
Mullins tossed a gem on Tuesday, flipping a one-hitter in the Cubs' 7-1 win over the Orioles. Mullins struck out 15 and walked just one, and took a no-hitter in the seventh inning.
Mullins lost his no-hitter when David Pavicich ripped a one-out triple in the seventh, and he lost his shutout when Steven Genetti drove in Pavicich with a ground ball.
But Mullins won the game, and he helped his cause at the plate with a single, double and triple in four appearances. He also scored three runs.
Foley matched Mullins' effort by going the distance in an 8-5 win over the Braves later in the week. Foley struck out six and walked just three as he scattered nine hits in the win.
Patrick Brogan was 3-for-3 and scored a couple of runs to lead the offensive attack for the Cubs. Eric Rowell and Mullins added two hits apiece, and Mullins scored twice.
Michael Gualt had three hits for the Braves, including a couple of doubles. Gualt also scored twice. Justin Gladfelter singled and doubled for the Braves, and Brian Roby had two hits.
The Braves were coming off two wins to open the week, beating the White Sox 10-2 on Sunday and the Mets 12-9 on Wednesday.
Gladfelter struck out 10 in four innings of no-hit pitching to get the mound win in the Braves' 10-2 win over the Sox.
Will Kapp doubled twice, David Martini singled and doubled and Sam Dickenson and Frank Fritsch each doubled in the win for the Braves. Gualt didn't have a hit, but the lead-off man was on base four times and scored three runs.
Chris Gradwohl's fifth-inning single was the only hit of the game for the White Sox.
Gualt tossed five strong innings to get the win and Gladfelter came on in relief to get the save in the 12-9 win over the Mets.
Gualt fanned seven and allowed just two runs on four hits in five innings to pick up the mound win. The Mets rallied for seven runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 10-9, but Gladfelter came on to get his club out of the jam, then retired the side in order in the seventh.
Gualt was 4-for-4 with a double and triple and scored four times, and Kapp scored three runs in the win. Martini singled and doubled.
Justin Schafer had three hits for the Mets, including a bases-loaded double in the seven-run rally in the sixth. Colby Moore singled and doubled, and Forrest Gallien ripped a double.
The Mets sandwiched the loss to the Braves with a couple of wins. The Mets opened the week with a 5-0 win over the Giants, then beat the Cardinals 8-2.
Steven Krach, Gallien and Schafer combined to toss a three-hit shutout in the win over the Giants. Krach went four innings to get the win, giving up the three hits and striking out four. Gallien fanned three in two hitless innings and Schafer struck out the side in the seventh.
Schafer was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored to lead the Mets at the plate.
Kyle Blair tossed six innings of solid relief for the Giants, striking out six and allowing just four hits.
Krach tossed three-plus innings of three-hit relief to pick up the win for the Mets in the 8-2 victory over the Cards. Gallien singled and doubled to drive in two runs in the win, and Reece Behrens doubled. Schafer had a single and scored three times.
Danny Sullivan had two hits for the Cards.
The league-leading Indians rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 9-8 win over the Orioles.
The Indians trailed 8-7 heading into the last of the seventh. Matt Perrone, who had three hits, beat out an infield single to open the inning and stole second. He scored all the way from second to tie the game when Andrew Clark beat out an infield hit.
Joe Donofrio dropped a sacrifice bunt, but he was safe when the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. Donofrio stole second and Danny Frey was intentionally walked to load the bases. But Matt Cisowski foiled the strategy when he rolled a single up the middle to drive in the winning run.
Cisowski had three hits and drove in two runs in the game, and Frey singled and doubled and scored three times. Carlos Alonso ripped a run-scoring triple in the fourth, and he also came on in relief to pick up the mound win.
A five-run rally in the third had given the Orioles the lead in the game. Bradley Tomy and Pavicich each ripped run-scoring doubles in the third, and Grant Kehrig cracked a two-run single.
Raymond Salazar and Tomy had two hits each for the O's. Salazar scored two runs.
Los Gatos Pony Baseball standings (as of May 11)-- Indians 8-1, Braves 6-4, Mets 6-4, Cardinals 4-5, Cubs 4-5, Orioles 4-5, Giants 3-5, Red Sox 3-5, White Sox 2-6.
